WOLVERINE 3 Will Likely Be The End Of The Road For Sir Patrick Stewart As Professor X
Wolverine 3 is really shaping up to be quite the swan song as not only will Hugh Jackman bid farewell, it sounds like Sir Patrick Stewart may be getting ready to retire his wheelchair too. Plus, an update on his role!
Not only will fans who grew up with the X-Men films have to bid farewell to Hugh Jackman's iconic portrayal of Wolverine next March in the yet-to-be titled Wolverine 3, it's starting to sound like they may also have to say goodbye to another long-time X-Men actor - Sir Patrick Stewart.
In an interview with ITV, Stewart spoke about the James Mangold-directed film for the first time since it began production back in May and while he was sworn to secrecy about plot details, he did still manage to drop a major bombshell when he revealed that it's likely this will be his last rodeo as Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X: "I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it's the end, it's over."
He's definitely not wrong there, especially considering his character has already managed to escape the clutches of the Grim Reaper once before. "Yes, I have, I have. Jean Grey vaporized me, from which you would think there would be no return." He's of course referring to Professor X's controversial death and subsequent resurrection in Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand. Stewart went on to make an official return to the franchise seven years later with a cameo in 2013's The Wolverine, which was followed by a full-fledged appearance a year later in Bryan Singer's critically acclaimed blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past.
However, this time around, with the future of the franchise at a crossroads, and with the last original cast member walking away, there certainly seems to be a sense of finality surrounding the Wolverine 3 and if he chooses to hang up the wheelchair after its release, it would be a more than perfect way to end his seventeen year run as Charles Xavier. Luckily for us, Stewart's not one to dwell on what he can't control and ended his brief chat with a very exciting tease for the role he plays in the highly anticipated sequel: "But watch out! In March, I’m going to be back on the screen again. A very different Charles Xavier, that’s all I’m allowed to say. Nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past."
