Wolverine Game Receives Mixed Reviews From Critics: A "Bloody Bore" That "Plays Like A Dream"

The first reviews for Insomniac Games' Wolverine are noticeably mixed, and while it sounds like there's fun to be had, Logan's blood solo outing isn't up there with the Spider-Man games.

As we first reported on GameFragger.com, the review embargo for Insomniac Games' Wolverine has lifted, and it's been cut down to size by critics. On Metacritic, the game has a score of 77, which, it's important to note, is considered " Generally Favourable."

However, that's one of Insomniac's lowest scores ever, placing it in the same ballpark as games like Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus and Sunset Overdrive. Neither is considered terrible, but Wolverine's score is a far cry from Spider-Man (87), Spider-Man: Miles Morales (85), and Spider-Man 2 (90).

Where has Wolverine gone wrong? While it sounds like the linear adventure excels with its bloody action, the story falls flat and, in terms of gameplay, the title breaks little new ground. Many of the complaints line up with what fans have been saying after watching the trailers, including some big creative swings that don't line up with the comics.

So, it's a slash 'em up, and nowhere near as groundbreaking as the Spider-Man franchise. Given how expensive games are on this current generation of consoles—and with Grand Theft Auto VI fast approaching—it's hard to say how essential Wolverine really is.

"At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours," writes GameSpot"At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn’t mean you can make really good superhero games with any character."

PC Mag calls Wolverine a "bloody bore," but Game Informer counters with, "Insomniac’s latest action opus is beautiful to look at and listen to, and it plays like a dream."

Kotaku adds, "The game’s relatively short runtime of around 15-to-18 hours works in its favor, because if Wolverine had been a massive superhero game in which Logan was running around entire cities doing odd jobs and side quests, that one note it repeatedly hits would have gotten old very quickly."

Over to IGN, it's said, "Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay." Push Square, meanwhile, states, "The campaign structured around it can be overly restrictive and the story quite dull, but as a mission guides you from one fight to the next, it lets the bloodshed do the talking."

"Logan is well realised by Liam McIntyre and some exquisite character art, but there are lapses in narrative and emotional arcs and some of the combat feels like a chore," explains The Guardian, with EuroGamer calling it "just fine" before concluding, "There's still just enough sincerity, character and camp here to keep this old dog alive."

One of the most interesting takeaways here is that Wolverine takes between 15 and 18 hours to finish. That is roughly in the same ballpark as the main Spider-Man games, so at least there will be plenty of gamers to sink their claws into.

From Insomniac Games, the developers of the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, comes Wolverine, an all-new take on an iconic character, based on Marvel Comics.

In Wolverine, players become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes—unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination—to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be.

Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Wolverine is coming to the PS5 on September 15.

I knew their story choices wasn't going to be "great". As far as the game in general, I can wait for it to go on sale.....when it's 75% off....maybe 50%.

Anyone else see that clip of the Quick-Time Events doing themselves? It seems like this game is just tap square and follow the blue line the whole time. Might get this if it's five bucks next year or something.

I'll eventually grab it up, but a lot of the gameplay I've seen just seems like standard hack and slash genre stuff with Wolverine and company.

Still excited to play it. 20 hours is perfect. Most of the games I've been playing lately end up slogs with 40-60 hours put into them. It's nice to break that up with something fun and not as long.

Also heard Logan isn’t even an asshole. He’s a kind man lol. Insomniac may have had lightning in a bottle with Spiderman 2018.

How is it mixed with a 77/100 on Metacritic and average ratings between all the reviewers being between 70 - 100?

Those are favorable and positive reviews. I feel that all the controversy about playstation ending PC releases, going all digital, and monopolizing all PS Exclusive games is affecting people's perception of the game.

They should be judging the game based on its own merits, not the fact that you literally cannot play this game anywhere else except on a PS5.

@FireGunn - Bruh people do all the time. Look at Call of Duty and all those yearly sports game. They've been the same for number of years or gotten worst and people consistently pay full price, thats why every year they are still the top selling console games.

Many reviewers are already comparing this game to 007 First Light it terms of gameplay and presentation. Except they are leaning more negative because many of the complaints are "if you play 1 sony playstation exclusive, then its not much different." Its the same unnecessary backlash God of War Laufey has been receiving too.

This game went from a potential game of the year contender to a potential reason Insomniac gets shut down. This game cost over $300 million to make; I don't see how you can make that up with such bad reviews, as these games need to fly of the shelves at full price to make real profits. Between the economy and the prices of new games, I don't see a 77 selling too well at full price.

Sweet Baby Inc infected a majority of games. It's clear Insomniac are too far gone to be saved so expect Marvel's Spider-man 3 to be much much worse.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 9/10/2026, 4:09 PM
@Scarilian - It's not just sweet baby. Sweet Baby isn't the reason for why this game isn't innovative. Insomniac has always been an overrated studio
Scarilian

@FireGunn -
True, but Insomniac became a lot worse under the influence of Sweet Baby Inc during the time between the release of Spider-man PS4 (2018) and Spider-man PS5 (2023)

Though I agree the gameplay aspects declining is due to Insomniac as opposed to anything else. They haven't really had any innovation, just stealing aspects from other studios such as Spider-man's gameplay being heavily taken from Rocksteady's Batman.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 9/10/2026, 9:48 PM
@Scarilian - They are a 16 person company with around 30 titles in total they have worked on; 5-8 per year is the "majority" of games? Aside from the handful of big ones most people bring up, I'm sure everyone was outraged by the wokeness in massive titles likle "Tales of Kenzera: Zau," "Capes," "Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn" and "Battle Shapers" lol.

I haven’t played a video game in awhile but some people thinking that Wolverine getting 7 or 8 out of 10 in alot of reviews (which so far are mixed-positive) means it’s horrible on social media is nuts to me…

Like come on man , the reaction is [frick]ing ridiculous but what do I expect in this day & age where people just look at the number ratings and don’t actually read the reviews!!.

Kotaku calling a game that takes 15-18 hours short is part of the [frick]ing problem with the industry today.Games are too expensive to make now. Is what they like everyone else will say. Another open world game? Is what they and everyone else would say. A hefty single player campaign of 18 hours is too short? Then dont [frick]ing complain about all these other things.

I lost all interest as soon as the characterizations of the heroes and villains dropped. They all look awful. Deathstrike, Jean, and Wolverine are all great examples. I didn’t need the characters to be overly jacked or sexualized but yikes they look rough. Wolverine looks like a baby faced chump and sounds like he behaves that way. How unfortunate.
TheStranger
TheStranger - 9/10/2026, 8:00 PM
From what I've seen of this game (quick time events that aren't quick at all and succeed, even if you don't press the right buttons). Also, the characters look "butthole ugly". If this game does one thing for certain. It will make us all look very fondly upon previous Wolverine games (yes even the NES one that had a banger title screen theme) as well as ask, why a HD version of Wolverine Origins: Uncaged Edition, isn't somehow on Steam? Oh and Sweet Baby Inc. Detected. Hard pass!
