Wolverine Launch Trailer Features Sentinels, Mystique, And Establishes The Game's Lead Villain

PlayStation has shared a launch trailer for Wolverine, putting the spotlight on the friends and foes players will encounter when they unleash Logan's claws on mutant-hunting Sentinels and more.

PlayStation has released the launch trailer for Wolverine, revealing more about what to expect from the game ahead of its September 15 launch.

Bolivar Trask is firmly established as the game's big bad, with a pre-Mister Sinister Nathaniel Essex, Mystique, and Jean Grey among those who will fight by Logan's side. Sabretooth looks set to pose a major threat to the hero, as will some intriguing Sentinel variants.

The mutant-hunting robots will be both giant- and human-sized, meaning Wolverine can get up close and personal while slashing them to pieces. There are also plenty of human enemies, so the game won't lack blood when Wolvie cuts his foes down to size.

Insomniac Games developed Wolverine, after previously delivering Marvel hits like Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2. Unlike those, this will be a linear story, without an open-world dynamic. It's also going to take some big swings with Marvel Comics lore if this final sneak peek is any indication.

The Flash alum Liam McIntyre, who plays Logan in the game, was recently asked by Deadline about following in Hugh Jackman's footsteps. "Everyone on Earth knows Hugh Jackman's Wolverine," he acknowledged, "as you should because he's phenomenal."

"What I’m really excited about for people now is that we get to tell a Wolverine story where you get to experience being Wolverine," the actor continued. "I know this combat’s going to be sick. I know the experience is going to be sick. But when you put that controller down, what do you feel? Are you going to feel something? Is it going to mean something?"

McIntyre added, "It was a real team effort. My face and a lot of his body and his work in there. So, together, I think we made a pretty sweet character."

From Insomniac Games, the developers of the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, comes Wolverine, an all-new take on an iconic character, based on Marvel Comics.

In Wolverine, players become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes—unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination—to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be.

Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, Wolverine is coming to the PS5 on September 15.

Would’ve preferred an actual Wolverine villain like Professor Thorton, Abraham Erskine, Romulus, or Cyber. They should’ve saved Trask and the Sentinels for an actual X-Men game, which is probably Insomniac’s plan down the line.

@soberchimera - I remember there even being an X-Men game on their slate with the leak a few years back. Think we'll just get the Brotherhood of Mutants in that though

@soberchimera - Yeah, this sounds like a period piece. Time will tell how well the plot plots...or if we care once Wolvy goes to work. The launch date should be Tuesday...cuz reasons lol.

It's crazy to me that I have no interest in this game. I mostly liked Spider-Man 2, and I thought it sounded cool when they announced this. But nothing I've seen has made me want to buy it. That leaked Iron Man trailer was way more interesting to me for some reason.

Looks great and I pre ordered but if that Sweet Baby stank peeks through I’m returning this for my 7.99 pro buyback rate at GameStop.

@Bucky74 - It'll most likely do, you just have to expect it. They *did* take out that Jean Grey segment though, so maybe they tried to soften the blow somewhat.

But I don't care about all that story shit, I just want good Wolverine gameplay once the story's over.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - It's not open world. That's half the reason I'm not buying it. Once the story is done, there's nothing more to do.

@Bucky74 - And if you think Sweet Baby INC won't get their claws in deep, you must have forgotten the mission in Spiderman 2 where you have to literally help an underage boy ask another boy to prom.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - I can see them having Logan bang Morph or something while he’s shifted into Jean. These folks are sick and will push their BS any chance they get. But, I’m definitely focused on the slashing for now. We’ll see in a week. So far, X Men Origins is easily the best Wolverine game ever made

@InfinitePunches - And they force you to watch the ending. I’m sure one of the adult male developers was wanking it while they programmed that. I might be wearing blinders, but I’m hoping they know that this time fans are ready for that and don’t want to sabotage their sales

@InfinitePunches - Are you talking about the side mission you don't have to do?
InfinitePunches
InfinitePunches - 9/3/2026, 12:23 PM
@FireGunn - Yeah, in the game you don't have to play, on the console you don't have to buy. I don't get why it would be relevant that it's not a main story mission.

You aren't required to watch the DCU. You're still allowed to acknowledge when it's pushing an agenda.

@InfinitePunches - Oh I know it's not open world. But you can replay all the mission/boss fights/nightmare doors as you wish, and there will be some more open areas to explore, at least Madripoor.

If I can watch an X-Men movie and then pop the game in to slice some shit, i'll be satisfied.

This might be the last PlayStation game I try… really disappointed with their new business model of trying to rip off players.

I recently bought the Invincible game to find out the gameplay is worse than a cellphone ap game and I tried the beta for Marvel Tokon and same crappy button mashing combo crap… marvel vs Capcon is still the goat for comic book fighting games.

I guess...I'm excited as a fan of Wolverine and the X-Men that there is a next-gen X-Men related game and will most likely buy. But on the other hand...wtf is this story?!?

The Suit is overdesigned and the action looks repetitive. I don't need an open world, but I need more dynamic action than hack and slash.

The only thing hindering my excitement is the combat.

After playing the Arkham games, and the Spiderman games, that style of combat just feel so repetitive and over done.

Looks pretty fun. As much as I prefer open world games, I don't see it working with Wolverine. He needs different environments. My guess is the fighting will get repetitive but I think the non-fighting parts (exploration/detective work) could be fun.
