X-MEN: Marvel Studios' Reboot Could Start Shooting Sooner Than Anyone Expected

With X-Men '97 getting fans psyched for mutants all over again, a new report claims Marvel Studios' live-action X-Men reboot could begin production even sooner than we expected. Read on for details...

Under former Disney CEO Bob Chapek's watch, Marvel Studios began producing a seemingly endless stream of content. From movies to TV shows to "Special Presentations," it started to feel like any and every character was being given the spotlight, a move which diluted the brand.

Bob Iger is now back in charge and, after some pricey streaming series and a handful of box office disappointments, Marvel Studios has seemingly returned to focusing on quality over quantity.

However, that inevitably means some characters and franchises will be sidelined, likely in preference for those which can produce guaranteed hits (when you stop and think about it, it's crazy that 5 years have already passed since the last Avengers movie).

Could that explain this latest X-Men update?

According to Production Weekly, the plan now is for Marvel Studios' planned reboot to begin production in late 2025. This suggests the new X-Men movie will be with us quite a bit sooner than expected, though we'd caution that nothing is confirmed as we write this.

The publication also claims that Shang-Chi 2 will start production next March, with Armor Wars also scheduled for 2024. Interestingly, it appears cameras could start rolling on Vision Quest later this year.

Back to the X-Men, though, and rather than waiting until a year or two after Avengers: Secret Wars concludes the Multiverse Saga, it would be wise for Marvel Studios to get on with rebooting those mutants and launch several new franchises in the process (Wolverine, X-Force, and more could eventually join the main X-Men movie).

"The X-Men are as solid and as rich and as a great a concept in characters as exist," Feige said in an interview last year. "There's the return of the animated series [this] year, which we're very excited about. I saw some new final episodes today, which really bring you back to that core of who the X-Men are and that soap opera that those characters represent."

"Part of the fun is that I've been at this company for half my life, and we're just now tapping into arguably one of the biggest aspects of the publishing history," he added. "It's pretty remarkable, and it's a testament to the house of ideas and what Marvel publishing has done these 80 years. The question is how to do it and when to do it, and that's something we've been working on for years."

Stay tuned for updates on X-Men as we have them.

It would only makes sense after Secret Wars, no?

Sigh...may the One Above All have mercy on our soul.

@Doomsday8888 - Think it is more likely wires are a tad crossed here and we will get a bunch of phase 6 films set on other timelines such that we will get an Xmen film before Secret Wars using (mostly at least) the FoxMen cast with Monica Rambeau whilst the multiverse starts falling apart setting them up for inclusion more in Secret Wars. THEN after Secret Wars we get the new, recast, Earth prime version of the Children of the Atom when the reboot is complete (but could also start having some members appear on the current Earth prime before prior to them forming part of the new Xmen team after).

IE the start of the reboot may begin near the start of phase 6 (with maybe a bigger gap between the two Avengers movies even, the first at the end of phase 5/very start of phase 6) but won't be fully complete until the end of it.

Ngl, movies set in other timelines could be frickin dope.

Even Spidey 4 with Raimi, don't even get me started on my beloved FoX-Men.

Too good to be true tho.

Xmen/mutuants in general is the one thing from Marvel that i feel should be done as a series with movies interconnecting them or vice versa. So much that they can do there.

Yeah, I don't believe they'll start production on any of those soon. Unless they wanna keep it in a vault for over a year like Ironheart.

Anywau I do hope X-Men is one of the first movies in the next saga. If Avengers movies wrap up phases, I think X-Men could be used to start them off.

Maybe plans have shifted , you never know but I’m gonna err on the side of caution for now.

Also I just wanna say , I get Disney & Marvel wanting to be less risky for now due to the unpredictable nature of the box office for now and focus on “guaranteed” franchises but it sucks if that means certain characters will be sidelined.

The MCU itself was built on risk with using lesser known characters like Iron Man at the time so it’s dissapointing if true that they may not be doing that anymore ( or atleast for a bit).

@TheVisionary25 - "for a bit" is my guess.

How long is a "bit" is anyone's guess.

Yeah, no. Basically all of that "endless stream of content" was approved and in production when iger was in charge.

Let's face it, chapek was meant as a scape goat.

@Origame - “endless stream of content”… that’s because Disney/Marvel felt they could pump out anything and the majority would just eat it up and beg for more and now that nonsense has shot themselves in the foot.
I wonder where Marvel would be right now if Disney never bought them out.
Origame
Origame - 4/4/2024, 1:11 PM
@WruceBayne - yeah, especially since those endless streaming content are from disney+. Iger's pet project that he considered the future of disney. Of course he's gonna be the one who pushed content onto disney+ with marvel, their most successful franchise.

It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Disney under Iger was an unprecendented, historical success taht the world has never known before or after.

It's also obvious that everything that came out under Chapek was mid-to-meh.

Again, greenlighting doesn't mean jack shit.
Iger greenlit the sequel to Captain Marvel. Now go on wiki and track the creative production of the film and how it morphed into The Marvels all after Iger left.

Origame - 4/4/2024, 1:25 PM
@ObserverIO - you're speaking like you work for iger.

And yes, I read the production notes. It was always intended to be a team up of Carol, Monica, and kamala. In fact, Imani was hired while iger was still there. All they really did was let the creative be creative. And guess what? Iger isn't a creative. All the ceo was gonna do was approve of marketing decisions like changing the title and call for fixes after the test audience hates it. And guess what? Both of those were iger.

@Origame - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marvels#Production

In 2019 Feige wanted it to be set in the 1990s. How could Ms Marvel and Photon be in it if it was set in the 1990s?

Official development began as Iger was leaving in January 2020. Megan McDonnel was negotiating to write it.

It wasn't until August 2021 that the director Niua DaCosta came aboard.

DaCosta's original pitch included Adam Warlock and time travel.

Long after Iger left.
Iger left in February 2020 and the film still hadn't settled on a premise in August 2020.

So how the [frick] do you actually blame the man.

Also that wasn't hyperbole I was spouting when I was sucking his dick. Disney under Bob Iger was historically and unprecendentedly successful. It was more succesful than it had ever been before and more successful than any film studio has ever been in history before or after. This is not hyperbole. It sounds like it, I know, but it is solid fact. That is why it is patently absurd to doubt his abilities after he has achieved something like that.

Origame - 4/4/2024, 3:01 PM
@ObserverIO - feige can want a lot of different things. They also hired Imani in 2019 so those plans clearly changed right away.

As for both time travel and Adam warlock, again, she can want all kinds of things. Adam warlock was already off the table before infinity war was filming because he was always gonna go there. None of this is saying they didn't have a set story in mind that they were pursuing. In fact, it basically confirms it. She tried to give a different story, and they turned it down.

And it did settle on a premise. Nothing about your evidence suggests otherwise.

But guess what? When he came back he insisted on reshoots and gutting the film, making the final film incomprehensible.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/4/2024, 3:22 PM
@Origame - They turned her down because they were already using Adam Warlock in GOTG3 not because they had another story in mind.

The fact is, this all happened under Chapek's watch. The facts speak for themselves. Very very loudly.
Iger left in 2019. Things went to shit soon after.

If he'd left just after greenlighting Infinity War and Endgame and Chapek took over, it's highly likely that those movies would have been as bad as recent MCU movies have been. Thor Ragnarok would have been basically Thor Love and Thunder.

Greenlighting something and executing something are two very different things.
Origame
Origame - 4/4/2024, 3:38 PM
@ObserverIO - 1) why do you think it can't be both? Especially since feige promised Gunn could use Adam warlock in guardians well before even infinity war was in production.

2) what? Both those movies were not only greenlit but finished and released the year he left. Endgame came out 2019, the year he left. Plenty of films and shows were greenlit, filmed, and about to be released when iger left. And it was phase 4 that got people tired of marvel by the time phase 5 and both quantumania and the marvels came out.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/4/2024, 3:58 PM
@Origame - 1) it could, but we don't know that

2) Hypothetically. Those movies were awesome, but if he had only greenlit them and then left they might not have been.
Origame
Origame - 4/4/2024, 4:04 PM
@ObserverIO - 1) we have enough. Especially since they're perfectly in line with the quality of phase 4.

2) in your opinion. But plenty hated them. Hence why people left. Marvel built up so much good will with audiences in the first 3 phases. It's idiotic that phase 5 is simply when the quality left and everyone instantly left. This was building up for a while.

@Batmangina - Making a better movie would obviously make a difference.

@Origame - So you think that things started to go wrong before Infinity War? That Infinity War and Endgame were bad?
Batmangina
Batmangina - 4/5/2024, 6:28 AM
@ObserverIO - At this point there isn't any proof that they can make ANYTHING better than box checking dreck.

The car started towards the ditch with the first Captain Marvel and 'The Blip' - it was Death of a 1000 Cuts for a minute but they just started cutting limbs off after awhile.
