X-Men Rumor Reveals Surprising Plans For Ben Wang's MCU Debut As Bobby Drake/Iceman - Spoilers

According to a new rumour, Ben Wang's Iceman will reportedly be among the first mutants Jean Grey meets when she arrives at Xavier's School, suggesting the X-Men may already be assembled.

Yesterday afternoon, the trades broke the news that Karate Kid: Legends star Ben Wang has been cast as Bobby Drake/Iceman in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot.

The decision to cast an Asian actor as a character who is portrayed as white on the page has generated the expected online discourse. However, Wang's star is on the rise, and he'll be front and centre in this month's The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Now, some intriguing new details about Iceman's role in X-Men have been revealed. According to Knight Edge Media, Iceman will already be at the X-Mansion when Jean Grey arrives and is set to be the first mutant she meets there.

This suggests that Professor X has already recruited mutants to his team before Jean. This may be a sign that, following her appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean will be our entry point into the team and perhaps even one of Charles Xavier's final recruits.

The image of Jean Grey walking through the doors of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and being met with Iceman shooting into frame on one of his iconic ice slides is pretty exciting (if that's the plan). For now, we'll just have to wait and see.

"I’ve just been digging into so many of the old comics and the entire Claremont run, and just going through stuff and really trying to think about what can we do well that feels new and feels different, and that hasn’t been done well before?" X-Men director Jake Schreier previously said. "Obviously, there’s such an incredible cinematic tradition of these comics, but what can we do? And how can we put our own spin on what that is?"

The prevailing theory is that X-Men will start with the original five mutants, with the likes of Rogue and Storm added to the team as the story progresses.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Asa Germann (Gen V) as Angel, Ben Wang (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm, and Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier.

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics. There are also rumours that Marvel Studios will introduce Apocalypse as the next Saga's big bad.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

As it should. The one way race swapping hypocrisy needs to go.

Actually, ALL race swapping needs to go.

@Odekahn - It’s not that deep. No need to cry about it. There’s a thing called nostalgia. You are not obligated to watch this upcoming reboot. You can stick to watching the fox men movies where Shawn Ashmore (a white actor) played Iceman. You have a choice. So make it.

@Odekahn - If there was ever a time where race lifting characters compared to the source material could actually be to an adaptation's potential benefit, it'd be with the X-Men, given how often mutantkind served as an allegory for oppressed minorities and how many classic stories contend with prejudice and bigotry.

@UceOmega - Making a statement and having an opinion isn’t the same as crying. I could easily say “you’re crying about me crying” because you’re complaining about me voicing my opinion.

I’ll watch the new X-men, and Iceman is one of my favorite mutants. Doesn’t mean I can’t voice that I’m displeased with the shitty casting.

@Odekahn - There is nothing about Iceman that says he can't be another race, nothing about him is tied to being white .

I think people like you need to go.

I don't care about Bobby's race or sexuality. What I do care is that they make his powerset look much better than the past X-Men films

@Wahhvacado - exactly. He finally ices up ONCE in X3? We got some ice slides in DoFP at least, that's the only time they kind of tried to do the character justice.

@Wahhvacado - Yeah they need to showcase iceman’s omega level potential. None of this street fighter style power flexing that we saw when he fought Pyro in Xmen the last stand.

@SummersEssex - @UceOmega - Completely agree, he feels completely wasted previously so hopefully we can at least get a glimpse of where his powers are headed and how he is omega level

He should have been able to do this all along

Q: If the new Rogue touches Gaysian Iceman will she get the gay?

PS: Bring back Ellen Page too - she needs a gig!

I just want a bi Bobby Drake. Or at least if the MCU does have him be gay, don't do it in the same ass-backward manner that Bendis did it.

@asherman93 - yeah ,have him be gay or bi from the onset if they go that direction.

I have absolutely no hope in any of this, and it feels great. They can race and center swap everyone. Beast can identify as Nightcrawler, I don’t care. If it’s good, cool. If it sucks.. it was expected.

It sounds like Jean will have an arc not too dissimilar to Rogue and Wolverine in the orignal 2000 movie. I'd have hoped for something a bit more original. But let's wait and see

Casting was too comic accurate they needed to throw the inevitable wrench into the mix for controversy, cuz marvels a sassy gay guy that loves being messy

Honestly , Jean being our entry point or POV into the world is what I expected Schreier & Marvel to do tbh so this “news” isn’t really surprising…

I’m sure some will have issue with Jean not being one of the first X-Men but given the setup of BND and Marvel trying to avoid doing origin stories as much as possible , Xavier already having began the school aswell as gotten a few “students” made the most sense imo.

I guess this means Xavier will already have Cyclops , Angel , Iceman ,Rogue & Storm there amongst possibly others aswell as maybe Emma Frost as his right hand post her White Queen days but less sure about how she fits in tbh then the others since she could be just working with Sinister.

Anyway, we’ll see but I’m excited for the film & especially the cast’s chemistry with each other!!.

Waited almost 20 years for comic accurate X-Men, and now this.
It's like wasted time, because it's not comic accurate Iceman.
Bobby Drake is Irish descent with blue as ICE eyes, not Chinese.
This actor is 5'4 and 29 years old, won't rise, so what rise?
