X-MEN '97 Spoilers: "Fire Made Flesh" Features Another Big Cliffhanger And Some Major Character Debuts

In the closing moments of X-Men '97's two-part premiere last week, a second Jean Grey showed up at the X-Mansion. In "Fire Made Flesh," Beast explains that the dishevelled double is the real deal and the one we've spent the past couple of episodes with is a clone that's much younger on a cellular level.

He later discovers that Mister Sinister created the new Jean and it's then that the villain exerts his influence over his creation to "wake her up."

She proceeds to unleash horrifying visions on the rest of the X-Men and transforms into the Goblin Queen. The mutants battle demons as she makes off with her and Cyclops' son, Nathan, delivering the baby to Sinister.

The X-Men set off to track the boy down as Wolverine comforts the original Jean. He brings the hero's memories back by getting her to read his mind, confessing his love for her - at last! - in the process.

Jean then manages to psychically link up with the Goblin Queen and gets her to doppelganger to see sense. Scott Summers and the clone break Nathan out of captivity, though the escaping Sinister warns them that by halting his experiments, they've doomed the child.

He's right because they're forced to watch as a Techno-Organic Virus spreads across Nathan's body, leaving Scott and the second Jean with no other choice than to send him into the future with Bishop (setting the stage for him to one day return as Cable).

Traumatised by what she's gone through, the clone leaves the X-Mansion as both Jeans discuss the fact neither of them knows exactly when they were swapped out by Mister Sinister. She takes the name "Madelyne Pryor" and sets off on her own adventures.

Scott, meanwhile, reunites with Jean, but there's clearly a divide between them.

In the final scene, we catch up with the powerless Storm in a bar where she's approached by a man named Forge. He's an old friend of Professor X and claims he can help her get back what she's lost...

In our review of the show's first three episodes last week, we concluded by saying, "A triumphant return for X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men '97 is an eXtraordinary epic which, while a little overreliant on nostalgia, should satisfy fans of the original show and serve as an eXcellent entry poin

X-Men '97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

The first two episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+ with new instalments following weekly.

Really enjoyed this episode.

But dayum, they adapted and burned through hundreds of issues in order to squeeze everything.

They've kinda shielded Scott Summers and he got Scott Free from certain criticism, i wonder what will happen with his duel with a powerless Storm...IF it ever happens that is...

I feel like they really played with the audience familiar with the comics or i dunno...Bishop saving Nathan was lowkey kinda powerful for me but maybe i just see what i want to see. :3

It's crazy how this show is able to fit stories, which many other shows would stretch out as season long arcs, into single episodes, yet (so far) they haven't felt rushed.

Really enjoyed this one. Love the Morph cameo this time.

The only thing is I wish they would have pushed this episode back a few to allow the time between Jean showing up and the Goblin Queen turn to have not happened so quickly.

Also, love the Forge and Storm tease, but in the old show wasn’t he in Bishop’s future? So he will now be a time traveler back to our time vs in the comics he is from this time? I guess we will see in a few episodes when they play that story out.

Looking forward to the Mojo video game episode next week.

@mountainman - he was active in the current time line in the X Factor "Cold Comfort" episode

@FoolishJester - Yeah I was reminded of that elsewhere. So my confusion around how a non-immortal Forge could have existed in the far future and present isn’t a continuity issue with this show. It’s with the old one.

Maybe he is from the present but is sent to the future after 1997. Or maybe he invented some way to extend out his lifespan. My brain just has a tough time processing this seeming continuity error.

@mountainman - right there with ya, given the man and his powers, I'm assuming he invents something to go into the future...hell, it'll probably be at Scott and Jeans request to visit Nathan ala Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, wouldn't that be cool....and decides to stay there

@FoolishJester - I was fully expecting Scott and Jean to go into the future so we could get an episode with “Slim and Red” in the future. That was a fun miniseries.

@mountainman - exactly, that's what I was referring to, wouldn't be surprised if that makes it as an episode in season 2

@FoolishJester - I would think later than season 2. They would have to do M Day and the mutant decimation before Hope is even born.

Great episode. I'm loving this series.

I'm not certain about the Cyclops voice actor. Feel like he throws away a log of his lines and I'm not sold on him.

Jennifer Hale will forever be Black Cat to me so that one throws me too. But overall, definitely in.

Anyone know why Storm didn't know Forge when tbey have previously interacted in TAS?

mountainman - 3/27/2024, 11:51 AM
@Thanson - Didn’t they interact in an alternate future and not the present time?

Thanson - 3/27/2024, 12:52 PM
@mountainman - I was thinking of the X-Factor episode. Wasn't Storm in that one? Also, I assume Forge would have talked to everyone after the Phalanx episodes since they were all part of that storyline.
mountainman
mountainman - 3/27/2024, 12:59 PM
@Thanson - Forge was in X-Factor wasn’t he? And yes the Phalanx too.

I guess they never explained how he was in Bishops future and in the present day.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen those so I don’t remember if Storm and Forge interacted during either episode or not.

Really loved this episode and how it really leaned to the "adult" side of things; pretty disturbing visuals, brief "nudity"and just overall haunting af, amazed they squeezed this arc into one episode and really dig the Cable twist at the end with Bishop coming full circle to save him... But given their interaction in the first season, hoping they tell us why they didn't recognize each other

mountainman - 3/27/2024, 1:34 PM
@FoolishJester - Bishop saving baby Nathan could prove really interesting if they play out the Hope storyline in a later season.

@mountainman - yeah maybe down the line, but would much rather get or Redd and Slim from The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix...and HOPEFULLY finally get our Age of Apocalypse
