X-MEN '97 Story Details Reveal More About Wolverine, Storm, And Magneto's Battle With Mister Sinister

A brief new synopsis for Marvel Studios' X-Men: The Animated Series revival has offered a better idea of what to expect when Wolverine, Storm, and Magneto find themselves battling the evil Mister Sinister.

X-Men: The Animated Series debuted in 1992 and ran for a total of 76 episodes. The show was a hit with comic book fans at the time and delivered a near-perfect take on the mutant team that still resonates to this day.

Marvel Studios looks set to revisit the franchise in Disney+'s upcoming X-Men '97, with most of the original cast returning to pick up where that series left off. Needless to say, excitement for this one is rapidly building but with some MCU TV shows reportedly being pushed into 2024, there have been concerns this revival might be among them.

All we know right now is that it's listed as "Coming Soon" on Disney+, so it hopefully won't be too long before we get an official update.

In the meantime, the @XMenUpdate Twitter account (via Toonado.com) has shared a synopsis for X-Men '97 which they say was revealed during the recent "X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event."

That reads, "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all."

This lines up with what was revealed during last year's San Diego Comic-Con, with Magneto attempting to head down a heroic route by working with the X-Men rather than against them. Wolverine and Storm serving as the team's leaders should be fun, while Mister Sinister stepping into the spotlight is definitely exciting (and long overdue).

As for Professor X, we last saw him heading into space with Lilandra, though it's believed he'll be missing when the X-Men: The Animated Series follow-up begins.

Keep checking Toonado.com for the latest X-Men '97 updates as we have them.

I'm hoping we get some of the mid to late 90s and 00s story arcs. Age of Apocalypse, Onslaught, House of M, Messiah complex, Second Coming and I hope the final season tackles HoXPoX.

@HydraB0b - All the Hope stuff could be a really cool overarching story for a season. I would argue that it should lead into AvX, but that may not make sense for this show.

@mountainman - I kinda wanna see that happen in the live-action saga. But that doesn't rule out it can't happen in the show though

@HydraB0b - I'd love a 5 part Age of Apocalypse and Messiah Complex

"X-MEN '97"

Let's Go!!

@bkmeijer1 - The cartoon could play those stories - House if M leading to the mutant decimation, with Hope born a few years later as the first mutant since and all the fallout of that - whereas the MCU would have to change a lot of major details to make it work. I’d still like to see something approximating these on the screen, but the cartoon could adapt them much more faithfully.

@mountainman - Them taking on those stories differently is one of the reasons I wouldn't mind seeing both adapting it, since the MCU definitely has to change a lot of things (I wouldn't even mind them skipping Dark Phoenix and House of M).

@Ryguy88 - Did you ever watch Wolverine And The X-Men? That show was great.

The season one finale hinted at Age Of Apocalypse but sadly it was cancelled.

@HydraB0b - Age of Apocalypse was actually a comics adaptation of the two-part 'One Man's Worth' episodes. Same story set-up and same designs.

@HydraB0b - X-Man or The Goblin Queen are perfect for appearing in X-Men '97.

The Goblin Queen (Madelyne Pryor) as part of Mister Sinister's master plan. She may involve Scott and Jean in an impersonation plot.

And if we see a special episode "Age of Apocalypse" as part of the mutant multiverse, X-Man could debut.

This show is definitely paving the path for a very soon-in-coming 'cross-over'; with others to follow

@marvel72 -

"Wolverine and the X-Men" IS great😆!!

Apparently,
the cancellation was "messy"

Good News 🗞️ is that, the '97 revival is happening with a larger budget, and most of the surviving voice cast are reprising their roles

Hopefully,
the updates are an improvement, and the storytelling is solid

I'm optimistic 😁

@marvel72 - yeah that show was great, too bad Disney cancelled it as part of their campaign to hurt the xmen franchise

@Ryguy88 -

I just discovered that channel; that guy's got great content and industry insight

The Yostverse is a beauty of ambition

I think '97 is going to be influenced quite a bit from the other Marvel animated productions that got canned, for whatever reason

Life keeps getting in the way; when I make my way through that show

I love it

I just started going through it again yesterday

Even in small doses throughout the day; it's still solid

I'm enjoying rediscovering it, all over again!

Please please don't make Wolverine a leader. I want to see the same character I loved in the 90s. That guy was not a leader. Don't make the same mistakes that modern stories keep making.

Where is Scott? Jean? I think in this canon Beast is probably a good fit too. Just not Logan.

Yeah why are they making Wolverine the leader?
Arthorious
Arthorious - 3/19/2023, 8:20 AM
@abd00bie - yeah once again Cyclops and the others take the back seat to Wolverine for the umpteenth time. I hope that’s not going to be the staple for the show. If it, is hard pass…

Nice, Sinister is a great villain. And if I remember correctly, Apocalypse is trapped at the end of time, and could come back with a simple plot device.
