CREED III: Michael B. Jordan Opens Up On Sylvester Stallone's Absence As Rocky Balboa

Next year's Creed III won't feature the return of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky (despite a key role in the first two movies), and director and lead star Michael B. Jordan has now addressed his absence...

Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan has stepped back into the ring and behind the camera for next March's Creed III, but he won't be joined by Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa in this threequel. The legendary actor appeared in the first two movies, and even earned an Oscar nomination for his work in Creed; with that in mind, it's fair to say he's going to be missed.

It was during the summer that Stallone made headlines when he took aim at franchise producer Irwin Winkler, and his son David, for not giving him the rights to the character he created. As a result, it appears the legendary actor's time as the iconic boxer has reached a disappointingly definitive end, both in this spin-off franchise any other upcoming projects being developed.

During a recent interview with Total Film (via ActioNewz.com), Jordan weighed in on Stallone and Rocky's respective absences, explaining how the movie deals with the boxer no longer being part of Adonis "Donnie" Creed's life.

"We wouldn’t have Donnie without Rocky, and he will always be a pillar in Donnie’s life," the actor and director explains, "but Creed III is really the dawn of a new era for the franchise and the character."

"It was really important from a storytelling perspective to get to a pivotal point in Donnie’s career a few years down the line where he has really established himself with his professional career and his family."

While it's a shame Rocky won't show up in any way, he's only ever been a supporting player in the Creed movies, and we really can't complain about Adonis getting more screentime. Regardless, seeing him emerge from the shadow cast by the iconic character will be welcomed, especially as he's in for the fight of his life against Jonathan Majors' Damian Anderson.

Recently, some new stills of the two opponents were revealed, and you can check those out here.

Creed III is set to be released in theaters on March 3, 2023.

There's nothing more to this franchise, hopefully this is the last. Now watch Joe Bob's last drive in show on Shudder!

@bobevanz - yeah now that rocky is out the entire point is lost. Mbj isn't gonna do it forever. And going any further is just gonna be a generic boxing franchise.

@Origame - you guys didn’t pay attention at all to Creed II.

@bobevanz @Origame

Respectfully disagree. It was a good (sometimes it happens) passing the torch kind of story so far.

Despite all the buzz surrounding the film, if we consider only the story it's tastefully executed.

Note I'd also prefer to see Rocky in it, but I wouldn't go as far as saying without him it can't go on.

Without good scripts for future films it can't survive.

@TheSuperMex - well Stallone disagreed, as he fully attended to appear in the third movie and only left when given a script that was too airtight to include rocky.

This isn't about him coming back as a boxer. This is about him appearing in general.

Sly acts like Rocky didn’t say “It’s your time now” at the end of Creed II when he knocked Drago Jr out. And it was improv by him too. Let the story actually progress.

@GhostDog - yeah he chose to step away from the Creed series.

although stepping away from rocky was not what he wanted

@GhostDog - Sly isn't pissed about not being in Creed III. He is pissed about not getting producer credit for these movies even when the whole Rocky franchise was his idea. The people who tried to stop "Rocky" from happening or contributed nothing to the franchise got producer credit when it became a hit. Even their sons got producer credit in the Creed franchise without doing anything. But only Sly was sidelined.

As I’ve said numerous times on this site Creed III should have pulled a Godfather 2 and followed the growth of a young, digitally de-aged (deepfake) Apollo Creed coming up in Los Angeles with Adonis Creed getting complacent and losing his luster after defending his title numerous times.
As Adonis is going down Apollo is coming up.
And you can tell the redemption arc where Adonis faces a challenger that forces him to rediscover his love of fighting and regain his popularity.

Movie ends with Apollo winning his first title to begin his career and Adonis winning and possibly ending his career.

This will be the trend in the future. One day we will get a Indiana Jones without Indy. A Die Hard without John McClain. A Terminator without a Terminator. A Mission Impossible without Ethan Hunt. A Pirates Of The Caribbean without Jack Sparrow. Sadly all our heros are getting old but the studios want to keep the franchises going instead of creating new ones.

I think it was time for Donnie to do it on his own. The direction they went in looks good.

Folks really acting like they wanted to see a 70 year old man box XD

Let Rocky rest. His story ended on a high note.

The name of the franchise is called CREED. Not Rocky Balboa: The Creed saga. Let the character grow on his own. I loved Rocky's presence in the previous films but the way CREED 2 ended was a great send off for his character. His presence will be heavily missed but for character growth reasons, Adonis may need this moment to shine on his own.

BTW, didn't Stallone say he wanted to do another Rocky spin off with him training a foreigner?

This makes sense: Michael Jordan is amazing & the best actor in the history of acting. He will soon be made a saint.

Stallone is just an old white guy. Give this loser the boot.

Rocky is Rocky
Creed is Creed

If you want to watch a Rocky film

Give props to Stallone for creating the character and passing the torch. Give praise to Jordan for running with it. Rocky's legacy isn't tarnished, and Creed is only expanding the universe. I for one am pumped to finish out this trilogy. It's been great so far.

@DarthOmega - Well said. And I'm usually against soft reboots and such, but this spinoff was very well done. Let's hope it delivers.

@DarthOmega - yeag, the movie is called Creed and not Rocky after all. At some point it is time to move, and sounds like this is as good time to do so.

Creed 2 sucked. It was boring and made Creed into an annoying brat

I honestly don't understand how people are upset Rocky isn't in Creed III after the way the 2nd one ended. Rocky's story is finished. It was a good ending for the character. Be grateful they didn't go the lazy route of killing him off just to get a cheap emotional reaction from the audience...
