The Wrap is reporting that German actor Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age of Ultron; Penny Dreadful: City of Angels) has joined the cast of Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm's upcoming fifth installment in the long-running Indiana Jones franchise.
For the time being, further details on his key role are being kept under wraps, but he joins a cast headlined by Academy Award-nominee Harrison Ford (Blade Runner 2049; Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) as the titular archeologist. Golden Globe-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Solo: A Star Wars Story; Fleabag) and BAFTA Film Award-nominee Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange; Hannibal) both also recently joined the cast in undisclosed roles.
2x Academy Award-nominee James Mangold (Logan; Ford v Ferrari) will be in the director's chair, taking the reins from 3x Academy Award-winner Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park; Ready Player One), who directed the previous four installments.
Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story; The First Time) - the son of Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence Kasdan - was recently brought in to touch up the script, following original screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park; Spider-Man) exiting the project.
Spielberg will executive produce with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel serving as producers.
Indiana Jones 5 is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
