INDIANA JONES 5 Adds PAIN AND GLORY Star Antonio Banderas In A Mysterious Role

Indiana Jones 5 has been shooting for a few weeks now, but we're only just finding out about a major new addition to the cast in Academy Award-nominated Pain and Glory star Antonio Banderas...

James Mangold's Indiana Jones 5 has been filming for a while at this stage (as the various leaked set photos will attest to), but the major casting announcements are still coming. The latest big-name to join Harrison Ford on Indy's latest adventure is Academy Award-nominated actor Antonio Banderas (Desperado, Shrek, Pain and Glory).

Deadline broke the news, but don't mention anything about the character he'll be playing. Banderas joins fellow franchise newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther) and Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round, Doctor Strange), who is believed to be playing the villain (shocking, we know).

Ford recently suffered a shoulder injury while rehearsing a fight scene, and is not expected back on set for at least another week or so.

Indiana Jones 5 will reportedly find Dr. Jones once again coming up against his favorite foes, the Nazis. We also have confirmation that the movie will be set in the 1960s during the space race, possibly incorporating elements of Operation Paperclip. The setting would place this adventure after the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but since previous set photos have confirmed that Ford will be "de-aged" for certain scenes, it's safe to assume that the story will play out over different time-periods.

John Williams will return as composer. Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers. Indy 5 will whip into theaters July 29, 2022.

I wonder if they'll add a cheeky reference/Easter egg to his time as Zorro.

It would be novel if Antonio Banderas plays a Spanish character and he doesn't play a South American character. Also, it would be interesting to see Indy in Spain at the beginning of the movie.

@Repian - enough of the occult that can be linked to Spain, so that would be cool to see. Banderas as an Argentine who housed Nazi's would be fun too though

@bkmeijer - In fact, Spain is also a paradise for the fugitive Nazi. Also, the dictator Francisco Franco facilitated the entry of Nazis into the country. Also, Franco lived in the 60s.

@Repian - okay yeah, that would be much better than what I suggested

Maybe he’s from Argentina and the Nazis actually aren’t just in the past

“Pain and Glory” Star??? What the heck is that??

I’d put the name of a movie that people have actually watched and liked when I reference a movie to identify an actor/actress.
Like “Desperado” Star Antonio Banderas… or “the Specialist” Star… orrrr “the Legend of Zorro” Star.

@slickrickdesigns - Banderas received his only Oscar nomination for that movie, losing to Joaquin Phoenix. In terms of award nominations, that's his biggest role.

I get what you are saying in terms of popularity, but *not* calling Pain and Glory "a movie that people have actually watched and liked" is a bit much. Just saying.

My family and I watched Raiders again today. You can definitely see the certain amount of glee that Spielberg gets from each creative death a Nazi receives. It's definitely cathartic.

Pain and Glory star? I believe you mean Zorro star. Still wish he’d gotten a third film to complete his trilogy even if the second film sucked. Mask of Zorro is a classic though and one of the best and most underrated superhero films.

Best part of Expendables 3! A true LEGEND. Glad to see him getting more work in the mainstream these days! It seemed like all he was doing was direct-to-video stuff for like 10 years...
