James Mangold's Indiana Jones 5 has been filming for a while at this stage (as the various leaked set photos will attest to), but the major casting announcements are still coming. The latest big-name to join Harrison Ford on Indy's latest adventure is Academy Award-nominated actor Antonio Banderas (Desperado, Shrek, Pain and Glory).
Deadline broke the news, but don't mention anything about the character he'll be playing. Banderas joins fellow franchise newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther) and Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round, Doctor Strange), who is believed to be playing the villain (shocking, we know).
Ford recently suffered a shoulder injury while rehearsing a fight scene, and is not expected back on set for at least another week or so.
Indiana Jones 5 will reportedly find Dr. Jones once again coming up against his favorite foes, the Nazis. We also have confirmation that the movie will be set in the 1960s during the space race, possibly incorporating elements of Operation Paperclip. The setting would place this adventure after the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but since previous set photos have confirmed that Ford will be "de-aged" for certain scenes, it's safe to assume that the story will play out over different time-periods.
John Williams will return as composer. Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers. Indy 5 will whip into theaters July 29, 2022.
