INDIANA JONES 5: New Stills Showcase The Movie's 1940s-Set Opening Sequence And Indy's Goddaughter

Some new Indiana Jones 5 stills have started doing the rounds on social media, showcasing a number of big moments from the highly anticipated Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull sequel.

Those show Harrison Ford's iconic adventurer in a variety of situations, with the older Indy running through some city streets and teaming up with his goddaughter, Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). However, the most intriguing reveals what looks to be a younger Indiana alongside Toby Jones' character facing off with a Nazi (likely Thomas Kretschmann) atop a train.

Is this the action-packed opening we've heard so much about or another flashback scene?

Time will tell. However, even though Indiana Jones 5 uses state-of-the-art visual effects to de-age its lead, director James Mangold wanted to keep things practical.

Talking to Empire (via ActioNewz.com), the Logan helmer explained, "If anyone in early meetings brought it up, I'd say, 'no volumes, please.'" Instead, he chose to battle the pandemic and shoot the movie in Sicily, Morocco, and Glasgow.

Those practical effects also extended to helicopters, planes, trains, and cars. Producer Simon Emanuel adds, "Every type of vehicle, every country, we have scenes that are recreating really iconic, giant events."

This will be music to the ears of fans, and a good indication that Disney isn't about to start throwing visual effects at a franchise that's always been at its best when making use of practical set pieces.

It's unclear when the first trailer for Indiana Jones 5 will be released, but it being the focus of a new magazine feature suggests it's somewhere on the horizon. Common sense says that a sneak peek will be attached to Avatar: The Way of Water next month and, if that's true, we'd imagine it will drop imminently.

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
