It wasn't too long ago that it was starting to look like Indiana Jones 5 wasn't ever going to happen. For some, that came as welcome news after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the disappointing movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after a 19-year absence.

Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were plotting out story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg walked away from the project, agreeing to hand control of the iconic character to a new filmmaker.

With that, Logan director James Mangold was enlisted by Lucasfilm to take the helm of the project. Since then, the movie has been mostly kept under wraps, though that chance recently with the release of an Indy-centric issue of Empire Magazine.

Now, Disney has officially released a full gallery of stills from Indiana Jones 5 (via ActioNewz.com).

A few might be familiar to you, though we can now share them without any pesky watermarks. The descriptions confirm some character names too, with Shaunette Renée Wilson as Agent Mason and Toby Jones as Basil. We also learn that the young Indy is facing off with Mads Mikkelsen's Nazi villain Doctor Jürgen Voller in the opening flashback.

Those two having a history would explain why he has such an issue with Voller's reemergence in 1969, and his right-hand man, Boyd Holbrook's Klaber, looks suitably formidable here.

We also have some new shots of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as his goddaughter Helena. Rumour has it the franchise could continue with her character as the focal point, though we'd guess that will very much hinge on how fans respond to Helena next year (we're expecting the usual complaints about a female lead, unfortunately).

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.

It's nice to see that Harrison Ford at his age can still be in movies like this and Marvel.

@defenderofthefaith - Yeah, he actually looks great for his age. Pretty amazing. Really looking forward to this one, but hope it is the definitive end. No interest in a spin off or continuation with his god daughter, or anyone else for that matter.

Odds on Indiana being the backup character in his own movie? I’d say high.

@mountainman - Probably not as much, but this will be like Men in Black 3 where Tommy Lee Jones is a main character IN the story, but he doesn't really feel like it.

@KWilly - We will see. Disney has a habit of doing this lately. Hawkeye, Moon Knight, even Loki were all shows where the title character got less focus than his plucky female counterpart.

Overall, they haven’t done a good job showing reverence towards male main characters in recent years. I get if Ford is too old for all the action sequences. I just hope that Indy is still shown as competent.

I do look forward to this. Old Ford, Mikkelsen, Holbrook and Waller-Bridge are all people I look forward to seeing in this.

I like what Harrison Ford said about this being set around his retirement as a school professor and how that frees up Indy's time to get into a little mischief again.

That premise DEFINITELY feels like Indiana Jones at it's core and if they can make his journey through the film feel a bit like UP, I would be SO HAPPY. I use UP as an example because in The beginning of the movie Carl seems resigned to death and by the end he's swinging and running and flying again at the top of his game. I truly hope this movie has Indiana Jones go out on a high note (whether he lives or dies)
