There was a time when it began to look like Indiana Jones 5 was never going to become a reality. For some, that might have come as welcome news after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the critically panned movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after 19 years.
Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were mapping out story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg eventually chose to step down from the project, handing control of the beloved character to a new filmmaker.
With that, Logan director James Mangold was tapped by Lucasfilm to take the helm of the project. Since then, there's been a lot of excitement for what he's bringing to the table alongside the returning Ford.
With D23 currently in full swing in Anaheim, California, some photos from the convention floor offer a first look at the movie.
As well as costumes for the returning Ford and the characters we'd bet are being played by Mads Mikkelson and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, concept art has been put on display depicting what looks like a number of key moments from this highly anticipated sequel. Along with an action-packed chase scene, we can see Indy visiting some exotic locales and exploring another tomb.
Rumour has it the movie will be set in 1969 and somehow tie into the first Apollo moon landing, and based on set photos, we already know that we'll get to see Indy both in his prime and as a slightly older adventurer. Hopefully, a teaser will be released by Disney during tomorrow's film and TV panel. Failing that, any sort of new intel would be appreciated at this stage.
Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released on June 30, 2023!
