For a time, it began to look like Indiana Jones 5 was never going to happen. For some, that might have come as a relief after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the disappointing movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after 19 years.

Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were plotting out story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg chose to walk away from the project, handing control of the iconic character to a new filmmaker.

With that, Logan director James Mangold was tapped by Lucasfilm to take the helm of the project. Since then, we've only got one sneak peek at the movie when a shadowy shot of Indy debuted during this summer's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

Now, though, Empire Magazine is putting the spotlight on the iconic adventurer on two fantastic covers. With that, we have confirmation Indiana Jones 5 takes place in the 1960s with a shot of Indy in New York City. It's previously been rumoured that this story will be set in 1969 and somehow tie into the first Apollo moon landing, something seemingly confirmed by set photos.

The publication promises some new stills from the movie are on the way, along with interviews with Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Boyd Holbrook, Mangold, writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, and producers Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel.

As per usual, we'll keep you guys updated once they start rolling out all of this new content!

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released on June 30, 2023.

@MosquitoFarmer - The leaked D23 trailer has been out there for 2 months (finally watched it yesterday) and it looks miles above KOTC.

Can't wait for this!

@MosquitoFarmer - I have an inexplicably good feeling about this one too, despite the disappointment of the crystal skulls movie.

Never seen the original 3 but I really enjoy Kingdom of the Crystal skull 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also I know he’s Indiana Jones and can’t be replaced , as per Ford himself, but aren’t all the action scenes going to be a bit incredulous? He’s like in his 70s or 80s and not in shape like Stallone or Arnold S. So idk lol

@MisterDoctor217 - I have never met anyone that enjoyed Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. You really need to watch the first 3 before the new movie.

@LadiesmanBumble -

I tried dude I tried, they’re just a bit boring for me 😅

Many people criticized Kingdom because of the aliens thing and that’s the thing I liked the most lol

The ride at Universal Studios is great too tho

He looked out of place in the 1950s (Crystal Skull), he looks even MORE out of place here. I like it. I like him belonging to an era where liberalism, civil rights movement, space shuttles and computers were unknown. That new, progressive world is far more stranger to him than some Inca ruins in the jungle of Peru.

@dragon316 - I actually think the time travel part is slightly real.

Some of this seems like a far stretch considering none of the spoilers mention Boyd Holbrooks

The pic on Empire with Boyd though is super odd of the location which makes me think it is time-travel twenty years before 5 is set.
