NO TIME TO DIE Producer Barbara Broccoli Confirms Idris Elba Is Part of The Conversation For Next James Bond

Speculation continues to run rampant about who will be the next James Bond following No Time to Die, and producer Barbara Broccoli has now confirmed that Idra Elba is among the actors being eyed for 007.

No Time to Die ended Daniel Craig's tenure as James Bond, and all eyes are now on who the next 007 will be. Many names have been suggested by fans, including Richard Madden, Henry Cavill, and Idris Elba, but considering the fact no one ever pictured Craig in the role, chances are the actor chosen won't be who we're expecting.

Talking to Deadline, longtime James Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli was asked about the continued support for Elba to play the iconic Ian Fleming creation.

"Well, we know Idris, we're friends with him, and he's a magnificent actor," she said. "And, you know, it's been part of the conversation, but it's always difficult to have the conversation when you have someone in the seat." Broccoli clearly isn't giving anything away, but seeing as Elba is now 49, there's a strong chance the studio will be looking for someone younger (which could explain recent reports the Thor: Ragnarok star is being eyed for a villainous role instead).

Adding that they're in no rush to name the next Bond, Broccoli added: "So, you know, I think we have decided that until No Time to Die has had its run and Daniel has been able to - well, we've all been able to savour, reap the benefits of Daniel's wonderful tenure, we're not gonna think about, or talk about anybody else."

No Time to Die was one of just a few box office hits during the pandemic, so chances are we won't be waiting too much longer before the next movie begins production.

Amazon recently purchased MGM, meaning they hold the rights to the franchise. While Broccoli insists the plan is for Bond to remain on the big screen (which does feel right), we'd be shocked if the series isn't eventually expanded on for streaming as that would be the perfect platform for spinoffs featuring other characters.

Stay tuned for updates.

Is he really James Bond?

@Spike101 - they are not ruling out any age group. Tom Holland pitched at an official meeting with the Broccolis recently too a set of young james bond films.

I think Henry Cavil, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, George MacKay, and Regé-Jean Page are the runner ups. I prefer the last 2 on the list as Elba, Cavil, and Hiddleston are too old. I prefer a younger james bond so that after 5 films he's not too old or si

@mastakilla39 - Yes I agree. Going for someone a bit younger would make a lot of sense. I also hope that they keep the character as written being a martini drinking, public school educated, orphaned womaniser. James Bond is after all James Bond, if they want something different then create a series of films about another 00 agent where they can reimagine anything they want.

Chris Hemsworth 😎

@Tasmaniac - I thought about this a few times, I feel like he would kill it, problem is it would just feel like Chris Hemsworth and not Bond. I think had he done it right when he started Thor or before he would have been great for it.

@micvalpro - It probably is a little hard because he is so well known now, but he has the absolutely perfect blend of charm and hard [foo foo]. No one has had that 100% since Connery.

Would Elba pull off the role of James Bond? 100% yes, but honestly he is just too old for the role now. He is only 4 years younger than Daniel Craig and by the time the next movie comes out he will likely be just as old if not possibly older.

Actors of a similar age have played the role in the past, but look at the years the classic bond movies came out, Sean Connery got out 5 Bond movies in 7 years, Moore got 7 movies in 12 years and most agree he was too old by the last few movies. They just don't make them that fast anymore, Daniel Craig had 5 movies in 15 years and despite being portrayed as a new OO agent in his first film, was considered past his prime by his third film.

We need someone who can stick around for a while without going past his prime too early. If we are thinking a black James Bond, id go with Jovan Adepo

was great in Overlord and Watchmen

@dracula - I agree 100% on the age. As for the diversity angle if it works overseas where much of the patronage lies it will fly. Domestically and in GB there will be some loss of the older crowd but otoh you might bring in some younger, more 'woke', folks, so I think that parts a wash on that part of the audience. YMMV.

Definitely too old but they could still include him. He could be M maybe. Or a villain.

10 years ago, he’d have been great. Today? He’d still be great but only for 2, maybe 3 movies, if they were fast tracked. He’d be better off as a villain or rival 00 agent.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/21/2022, 7:26 AM
@VicSage - Three movies, max.
Plus, he didnt look his age 2 years ago, but after covid, he aged a lot, when you see him TSS, you can tell the scenes he shot after it.

I think what they should do with Bond is do one offs. Get a great director and a great actor and just do one movie. Do 3-5 movies just like that. Different actors and directors. Make it different eras. Different styles. That would be so interesting and refreshing.

Obviously age is going to be a factor. But in keeping in line with changing things up, as they did with the end of No Time To Die, they should at least have Elba just do one movie as Bond, and then still go on with another actor afterwards. So many people would love to see him in the role, and then they can still move on to someone else a few years after.

Unfortunately Idris has aged out. Too old for the role in my eyes. I don't have a favorite for the part right now but whoever gets the role I will feel equal parts congratulatory and sympathy. Bond is a great gig but comes with a lot of baggage as well.
