In the closing moments of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, the title character was shot off the side of the New York Continental Hotel by Winston Scott after crossing the High Table. Winston knows he survived, though, and John Wick: Chapter 4 begins with the assassin now hoping to find redemption.
The High Table, meanwhile, still wants him dead, prompting their leader, Marquis Vincent de Gramon, to place a bounty on his head that can end one of two ways: with John's death or if the aptly named Baba Yaga can replace him.
After being put through the wringer and killing a lot of people, John reunites with Winston and officially challenges the Marquis to a duel. With the bounty on his head raised, he arrives at that battle badly wounded and, despite facing even more challengers than expected, manages to outsmart his foe before shooting him dead.
With that, Winston is reinstated as the concierge of the rebuilt New York Continental, but John is fatally wounded from the trials and tribulations he's endured.
Thinking of his late wife, Helen, he dies peacefully on the steps of the church and is later buried in New York next to her while Winston and the Bowery King pay their respects.
A post-credits scene later reveals that High Table assassin Caine (who was one of John's old allies) is looking to finally reunite with his daughter after the High Table used her to force the blind assassin to go after his friend. However, he's being followed by Akira, Koji's daughter, who has set out on a mission of vengeance after her own father's death at Caine's hands.
Ballerina and The Continental are both set prior to the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 and, despite plans for a cameo appearance in the former, John's present-day story is over. The character is dead and this movie could quite easily serve as a fitting farewell to the assassin.
However, there's enough ambiguity surrounding John's demise to make it so that he could return should a fifth movie eventually happen. That has been greenlit, of course, but Keanu Reeves has made it clear he's taking a break from the role for now.
