Lions Gate Executives Reveal Just How Much The Hunger Games Must Earn To Justify A Sequel

Lions Gate has a lot riding on The Hunger Games after the consecutive flops of Conan, Warrior, and Abduction. Find out what the studio's executives have riding on the adaption Suzanne Collins' hit teen novel series.

Bloomberg has a great article profiling Lions Gate and their two head executives, Jon Feltheimer and Michael Burns. After the flops of Conan, Warrior ( it was loved by critics but bombed at the box office), and the Taylor Lautner action thriller, Abduction (who thought that would be a hit?)Lionsgate is in desperate need of a hit movie. Their hopes are riding on the $80-million dollar adaption of The Hunger Games. In their chat with Bloomberg.com the two executives revealed the studio has a lot riding on a movie set in a dystopian future where a totalitarian state forces 24 teens to duel to the death on national television.

Unlike their competitors, Bloomberg reports, the studio doesn't have amusement parks and cable networks to keep it going. It rises and falls with the release of every movie or TV show.

Feltheimer says “The Hunger Games” must earn at least $100 million in domestic box office sales to justify making sequels. “I’m not too concerned we won’t get to that kind of number,” the studio head confidently stated.

After receiving tax incentives from North Carolina, where the film was shot this summer, Lions Gate has about $30 million at risk in the production, Feltheimer says. The studio will probably spend another $40 million in marketing and advertising “The Hunger Games,” he says.

While their TV shows remain strong earners, the movie side of Lions Gate is really struggling and if Hunger Games bombs then who knows what the future holds for the studio. With so much riding on the film, it's hard to fathom the so-far lack luster marketing effort that's being produced. There's been a lot of hype built around the debut of the first poster and trailer but each was met with lukewarm reception by fans. But that was simply because essentially nothing was revealed in either promotional piece so the jury is still out on Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was acquired by Lions Gate Entertainment for worldwide distribution, which is being produced by Nina Jacobson's production company Color Force. Collins adapted the novel for film herself, and her script was reviewed by screenwriter Billy Ray. It is anticipated to have a PG-13 rating.

The film will be directed by Gary Ross with Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as the role of Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth as the role of Gale. The filmmakers went into production in late Spring 2011[43] with an anticipated release date of March 23, 2012.

0TheQuestion0- That...I know. I meant as far as box office popularity. This series was almost, if not as popular as the Twilight series, so I'd be very surprised if this series was not a huge success.

Yeah, the budget is low, plus they have apparently received a huge tax break to film in North Carolina. I'd say this is a shoe-in.

Yeah, I'm feelin' like this'll be fine box-office-wise.

And it's a god damn shame that Warrior wasn't a hit. One of the year's best.

"...must earn at least $100 million in domestic box office" Ahm - Why does green lighting a sequel depend on WHERE the money is made. Are US-$ earned in foreign terretories less worthwhile?

For the love of God, I am sick and tired of people calling The Hunger Games "The Next Twilight". IT IS NOT. This book series is 1 billion times better than any Twilight book out there, there are no emo, moby, glittery vampire boys and some dumb faced so called heorin, Katniss Everdeen would kick Bella Swan's a** easily. This book and likely the movie has murder & mayhem in it. The only thing that worries me about this film is how they will PG-13 it, cause the book describes some tributes deaths and they are pretty gruesome. Also, the cast of The Hunger Games is way better than any cast Twilight ever had, I count at least 3 Oscar nominees in there (Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci) and a Golden Globe nominee (Donald Sutherland) and does Twilight have any of that? NO.

Even Harry Potter had a better cast than any Twilight movie did. Harry Potter had Oscar winners & nominees in it and acclaimed actors as well, plus people of all ages enjoy Harry Potter. Twilight is for tween & teen girls, Hunger Games is a well written book, one of the best book series I have read, and everyone I have recommended it too has told me they loved it and are eager to see the movie in March.

the marketing for this movie sucks. I still don't have any idea what it is about other than me googling hunger games. nice job Lionsgate... really drawing in the people who didn't read the book.

People, people, people...When I say it's the next Twilight, I simply meant that the Hunger Games Series will be the next huge success at the box office due to its rabid fans. That is the only comparison I was making. Having read both series, Hunger Games is by far and away the superior series. Ya'll need to calm down!

I can see the movie make around $300 million, to do a sequel.

@Ecks manfan

I have heard others say "The Next Twilight" as well as when you said it, and yes there is a love triangle between Katniss, Peeta & Gale, but that is maybe only 10% of the whole TRILOGY, not 98.7 % like Twilight is with their 3 knuckleheads.

My point is you do not compare anything good to Twilight, and if people say Hunger Games is the "Next Twilight" then that can TURN OFF people from seeing it, especially those who despise Twilight.

I have read all 3 Hunger Games books and am looking forward to seeing all 3 movies as well (though I heard they might split Mockingjay into 2 movies)

Who knows if it will reach $100 million or not. I am sure that the makers of Eragon and Percy Jackson and Spiderwyck and City of Ember and so on all thought their children's book adaptations would all make at least that much domestically. The film industry is littered with these things like The Seeker and Inheart and that one with the owls that fail to make enough to clearly justify making the rest. Why does the domestic take matter so much anyway. Look at The Golden Compass, it only took in $70 million domestically but took in more than $300 million foreign. No sequel for it however, although it did cost $180 million to make. Still one would think that might be enough to make the next one. So, good luck to the filmmakers but they are counting their eggs before they hatch.

Argo...you crazy bastard. On a side note, not many people know about Battle Royale, so I honestly don't think that is an issue.
