Scarlett Johansson And Natalie Portman In Line To Play Lisbeth Salander In THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB

David Fincher will not be returning to helm The Girl in the Spider's Web, and it doesn't look like Rooney Mara will be back, either. However, Sony does have some interesting replacements in mind...

We held out hope for a few years, but it's now been officially confirmed that David Fincher won't be finishing the trilogy he began back in 2011 with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Sony has announced that the plan is to skip the next two books in Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy, and move forward with the fourth installment, The Girl in the Spider's Web.

Though this technically means that they'd be continuing the story, it looks like the movie is being set up as a soft reboot.  According to the press release, Fede Alvarez is now attached to direct, working off a script he wrote alongside Steven Knight and Jay Basu.

Perhaps even more disappointingly, it doesn't look like Rooney Mara is going to be returning as Lisbeth Salander - however, Variety does add that Sony are looking at both Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as potential replacements.

What do you guys think of this news? Any interest in a follow-up to TGWTDT without Fincher or Mara's involvement? The Girl in the Spider's Web is set for an October 5, 2018 release.

Why the hell are they recasting?! What is up with Sony these days?

Other than their PS, Insurance and phone division, it seems like the company doesn't know what the hell it's doing.

@DeusExSponge - I would imagine it'd be more that she won't do it without Fincher.

@ScarletFever - wasn't the ruff draft or at least the basic story written by the original author, from what ive heard he had at least 2 books in some stage of being written or developed

Never seemed like Fincher would actually have made the sequels once the first was released. Excellent movie though. As dark as it is, it is very enjoyable and with great performances all around.

I'd take Portman. She could give a more unexpectedly-dark performance, thus making it more effective within the context of the film. If you don't expect a great performance, which I think she's capable of, it's twice as effective.

Besides, ScarJo is everywhere now.
