TOP GUN: MAVERICK Opening Sequence & New Trailer Wows CinemaCon Audience

After debuting the first footage from Mission: Impossible 7, Paramount dropped an extended sneak preview of Top Gun: Maverick, which spotlighted the film's absolutely insane opening sequence.

Hot on the heels of debuting the first-ever footage from Mission: Impossible 7, Paramount shifted the focus to their other hotly-awaited Tom Cruise-starrer, Top Gun: Maverick, and surprised the CinemaCon attendees with the first thirteen minutes from the film as well as a brand new trailer.

While the trailer should find its way online sometime in the next few weeks, the vast majority of us will have to wait until November to catch a peek at the opening sequence for the Joseph Kosinski-directed action blockbuster. However, if you're not worried about spoiling yourself a bit, we do have a brief footage description that reveals where we find Maverick (Cruise) thirty-five years after the world saw him last.

According to Deadline and The Wrap, the film opens to the classic Top Gun theme song "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins before cutting to an airplane hangar in the Mojave Desert, where he gets on a Kawasaki motorcycle and rides to the airbase. When he arrives, he's informed to stand down because the TOPGUN program is being shut down.

Maverick being Maverick decides to defy his orders from the Rear Admiral (Ed Harris) and take a jet to Mach 10. He suits up, “Alright sweetheart, one last ride.,” and with that line, he's off. He quickly becomes the fastest man alive as he rapidly increases his speed until he cracks Mach 10, but, of course, he can't help himself and takes it to 10.3, which forces his engines to blow and the screen in the control room goes blank as his plane looks like it's on the verge of exploding. Cut to black.

A short while later, we find Maverick alive and mostly well walking into a country diner in the middle of nowhere, with everyone a little shocked to see him. He asks, "Where am I?," to which a little boy at the counter answers, "Earth."

As the opening preview concludes, a new trailer begins to play, showcasing even more awesome fighter jet sequences, introducing new characters played by Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, a tease of how Iceman will factor into the story, and a whole lot more.

In addition to the returning Cruise and Kilmer, the supporting cast consists of Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, Glen Powell as Hangman, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Charles Parnell as Rear Admiral Warlock, Danny Ramirez as Fanboy, Manny Jacinto as Fritz, Bashir Salahuddin as Coleman, Jay Ellis as Payback, Jake Picking in an undisclosed role, Raymond Lee in an undisclosed role, Lyliana Wray as Amelia Benjamin, Jean Louisa Kelly as Carole Bradshaw, Greg Davis as Coyote, and Bob Stephenson in an undisclosed role.

Top Gun: Maverick soars into theaters November 19.

Why is Maverick still flying combat missions as a 50 something year-old captain after more than 30 years of service lol? Man should be a five-star Fleet Admiral.

@BlackBeltJones - I think it is explained in the film. It was hinted at in the original pre-pandemic trailer.

I’m so curious how they’ll use Kilmer.

@micvalpro - Me too! And I really don't want to be mean, but last I heard he is in really rough shape. To the point that I don't know how well he will be able to deliver any lines. It's sad. Kilmer was my favorite in the original when I was a kid.

@CorndogBurglar - He’s healthy just his voice is shot to shit. And now he looks so much older than Cruise. So yea, let’s see what they do.

Tom,

Regarding your ever-increasing risky stunts:

Please be more careful. You don't need to keep outdoing yourself to impress us or make more money at the box office, so you?

I mean, this is really kind of "crazy", wouldn't you say?

Gizmoduck - 8/26/2021, 10:02 PM
@LSHF - it might be... Tom cruise crazy? Just be glad it's him not you. If you had tom cruise's troubles you be tom cruise crazy too. You'd flash your big white shiny smile and buy expensive shoes, but you'd be the only man on earth who couldn't enjoy Tom cruise.

“Take a jet to Mach 10…”.

Ok…so we are taking the Top Gun franchise into science fiction, huh? MACH 10??!!?? 10 freaking times the speed of sound1!??

There are no manned military aircraft that travel at Mach 10. The fastest manned aircraft EVER was the X-15 experimental plane and it travelled at Mach 6.7 in 1967. Most missiles that are categorized as HYPERSONIC travel at or around Mach 5. And this movie has Tom cruise in a manned aircraft at /Mach 10?

I hope thats a typo.

@PerrinNation1 - Tom Cruise could make a Cessna 172 Skyhawk reach Mach 10! He's Tom freakin' Cruise...!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/27/2021, 6:47 AM
@PerrinNation1 - Hahaha. So true. And from the trailers Maverick is flying an F-18 in this movie. Which only goes Mach 1.6. That isn't to say he can't fly in other planes during the movie, but you're right, the fastest manned jet went Mach 6.7.

He'll, even the fastest UNMANNED jet only made it to Mach 9.6. Which still isn't Mach 10 lol.

Who does this guy think he's fooling? Has he not heard of Google? Does he not know needs like us are going to look this stuff up and call him on it?

@PerrinNation1 - This has to be some new experimental jet in the movie.....

@willyburz - So like I said…Top Gun is now science fiction.
willyburz
willyburz - 8/31/2021, 8:19 AM
@PerrinNation1 - I'm sure the mach 10 thing is just a mistake, but it's not out of the realm of a newer version of the SR71
PerrinNation1
PerrinNation1 - 9/1/2021, 2:59 AM
@willyburz - An “SR-72” is said to be in development by The Skunk Works (Lockheed-Martin) but its said to be a hypersonic craft capable of Mach 6 (over 4000 mph). And that is exceptionally fast for any man made vehicle, manned or unmanned. I don’t think people realize how fast Mach 10 is.

Mach 10 is the stuff of movies and overactive imaginations (at this point in time).
willyburz
willyburz - 9/2/2021, 8:14 AM
@PerrinNation1 - I completely get the dumb mach 10 being used...BUT I'm talking about it being completely fine having him pilot a hypersonic craft in the movie...IF they go all Fast n furious in this movie, then we are doomed.

I think the original Top Gun is a classic but a solid rather than a great film; it may be one of Tom's most iconic films from the first half of his career, but its no where close to being one of his best films. But I'm really excited for this Top Gun sequel, sounds awesome.
