TOP GUN: MAVERICK Soars With $248 Million Global Launch; The Biggest Opening Of Tom Cruise's Career

Top Gun: Maverick has completely shattered all expectations, and looks set to finish its four-day holiday launch with $151 million. It's also playing strong overseas, and should soon top $250 globally.

Have you got that loving feeling? Paramount and Skydance sure have, as Top Gun: Maverick won the weekend with a reported $124 million three-day opening and an anticipated $151 million launch domestically over the four-day holiday weekend, which will make it the biggest Memorial Day opening ever.

The long-awaited sequel is now Tom Cruise's biggest opening ever and the first of his films to debut to over $100 million, which is an absolutely amazing accomplishment at this stage of his forty-year career.

The Joseph Kosinski-directed action blockbuster, which isn't playing in either China or Russia, is also performing quite well overseas and has essentially matched its domestic output with another $124 million. The film's worldwide total now sits at $248 million.

With a production budget of $172.5 million and $150 million in print and advertising, the film's reported break-even number is approximately $410 million, but based on this start, it seems quite probable that Maverick will soar past that figure with relative ease by the end of the summer.

The film's CinemaScore was revealed yesterday and the action blockbuster earned a highly coveted "A+," so word-of-mouth is exceedingly positive, and since it was able to keep its traditional 120-day theatrical window, should result in some extremely long legs through September

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had another strong weekend, with its worldwide sum now at $878 million ($375.4M domestic; $502.6M foreign).

Check out our exclusive interviews with director Joseph Kosinski and actor Glen Powell (Hangman) below:

In our review, we said, "Top Gun: Maverick is the must-see cinematic experience of the year! Packed with jaw-dropping aerial sequences, thrilling edge-of-your-seat moments, genuine heart, epic romance, huge stakes, and one of the absolute best performances of Tom Cruise's legendary career, this is the theatrical experience you've been waiting for."

Tom Cruise headlines the feature as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, with original co-star Val Kilmer returning as Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. The iconic pair are joined by an all-star supporting cast consisting of Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Vice Admiral Cyclone, Glen Powell as Hangman, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Charles Parnell as Rear Admiral Warlock, Danny Ramirez as Fanboy, Manny Jacinto as Fritz, Bashir Salahuddin as Coleman, Jay Ellis as Payback, Jake Picking in an undisclosed role, Raymond Lee in an undisclosed role, Lyliana Wray as Amelia Benjamin, Jean Louisa Kelly as Carole Bradshaw, Greg Davis as Coyote, and Bob Stephenson in an undisclosed role.

Top Gun: Maverick is now play in theaters worldwide!

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Well deserved. I'm hoping this and the batman bring in a Renaissance of sorts for practical effects. Neither of those movies would've been nearly as memorable if they tried doing those things with cgi.

I wasn't interested on a Top Gun sequel, but word of mouth is so good that's made me curious to watch it. Might catch it next weekend.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 5/29/2022, 1:25 PM
it's so weird seeing this do so well since this kind of american military aesthetic has been kind of dead since superheroes became the top dog of mainstream movie genres, but then again, if there's a crazy bastard that can pull off something like this is Tom Cruise.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/29/2022, 1:33 PM
@Spidey91 - The movie being a hit in the US was expected (except for some people), but these numbers everywhere else are nuts.

@TheHumanSpider2

I thought you said TG2 was gonna render MoM's legs useless this weekend?
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 1:30 PM
@LongMayHeReign - wait is strange 2 still in the running for 900 mill? Hey a billion is not necessary, I’d love to see a cbm in the 900 bracket
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/29/2022, 1:31 PM
@LongMayHeReign - An MCU event making $16M on its third weekend...including memorial day!

@TheWalkingCuban - It depends, if seems unlikely, but not imposible.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 1:35 PM
@LongMayHeReign - so yeah I just read up on it and my excitement is back. The second weekend plunge was not followed by similar plunges so this sucker may still pass 400 mill domestic! And it’s passing the Batman, no not better legs BUT still better actual numbers, so it beats it worldwide and domestic.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 1:38 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I read it’s a sure thing at this point. 900 mill gets my attention
ThorArms
ThorArms - 5/29/2022, 1:38 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - thought it wasn't even hitting $800?? Lol

A movie starring Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange making close to a billion is phenomenal.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/29/2022, 1:44 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - It might, unlikely, but it might.

@ThorArms - Last MCU event made $1.8B, people here were expecting those numbers, at the very least, $1.2B, saying otherwise meant being "a hater and a troll".
Now that very same people are claiming "it beat The Batman, massive hit", its an MCU event crawling to MAYBE maybe $900M.

MCU fanboys went from "biggest comic book event of the year" to "its just a movie starring Scarlet Witch".

[frick] off.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 1:46 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - 4th weekend
ThorArms
ThorArms - 5/29/2022, 1:49 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - people thought it was making as much as SPIDER-MAN? certainly not me. You're lumping everyone into one category?? You said it wouldn't get close to $800 but thanks for telling me to frick off. Sensitive
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 1:53 PM
@ThorArms - my range was 900 to 1.2, when 900 looked unlikely I lost interest. Now that it’s back in the running I see this movie as a success. It very nearly had BvS legs. Don’t know what was up with that second weekend cuz there were no comparable drops following that but the same happened with FFH, it did fine. I might have to analyze those 2 side by side
ThorArms
ThorArms - 5/29/2022, 1:59 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - my guess was 900-1bil. Considering civil War made $1.15 and featured the introduction of BP and MCU Spidey
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 5/29/2022, 2:03 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Its run in the US is pretty much over, it might make around $5M next weekend, and next weekend its run in the rest of the world is over with Jurassic World 3 coming out in some countries, maybe another $10M...it might reach $900M, is only $22M away from that, but it is unlikely, movie theathers are gonna give most screens to Maverick and JW3, makes no sense to keep giving them to a movie that is pretty much making pennies at this point...and a final BO of $900M-$1.1B was my prediction over a month ago, when I was called "a troll" by the exact same people who are now pretending to be happy with these numbers, when they kept posting "$1.5B-$1.6B, easily", that is what annoys me the most, they having the NERVE to calling me out when they keep getting Ls weekend after weekend.

It was fun to post predictions, and then either bragging when you got them right, or saying "I guess I'll eat crow, lol" when you got them wrong, but fanboys got so delusional at this point that they just pretend they never said what they said, it got boring...and I think that applies to the comment section as a whole, it got boring, you say anything about the MCU that it isnt complete and unadulterated praise, and you have half this site getting triggered (and that is because I blocked the other half).

No wonder why so many people left, this site became toxic AF.
DoubleD
DoubleD - 5/29/2022, 2:13 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - And DC/WB The Batman can't even hit 800 and now even Marvel haters expect every Marvel Studios movie to hit 1 to 2 billion. :)

The Batman = $769,213,618
DoubleD
DoubleD - 5/29/2022, 2:18 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - The Batman numbers talk who cares how Marvel Studios WINS :) DAY 84 Ha Ha Ha

The Batman.

DOMESTIC = $369,313,618

INTERNATIONAL = $399,900,000

WORLDWIDE =$769,213,618
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 5/29/2022, 2:28 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I did say between 800 and 900, I guess I nailed it.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 2:48 PM
@ThorArms - good call
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 2:59 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - let’s see, original numbers, pre covid, I think about 800 million. During covid, varied from 200 million and I don’t mean when Tenet was the only one out there, more like when F&F opened, I was very nebulous, somewhere in the 500-billion range. With black widow through Eternals I tightened it up to 6 or 700, for reasons. Post NWH, 1.2ish. Bad WoM, 900-1.2. Bad second weekend, I figured 850 tops. Good following weekends, back to 9.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 5/29/2022, 3:02 PM
@DoubleD - Yeah just because multi-verse head bad word of mouth doesn’t mean Thor will, I see a billion until further notice, but I won’t call a range just yet. Just a floor of a billion
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 5/29/2022, 3:49 PM
@DoubleD

It hasn’t had great WOM, at least not domestically. It had a monster opening and will hardly cover a 2x multiplier.

It’s going to be a big financial success. 900 mil+ is huge. But it also had a massive opening. It has been finding some legs in recent weeks but this and Top Gun are the only big movies out right now.

Also, MoM absolutely would’ve crossed a billion if it had access to a healthy China. But that sounds like it was never in the cards with America Chavez being so prominent.
