After an extensive casting search with 425 actresses across multiple countries, director Andy Muschietti (via Deadline) has announced that the Boston-born Colombian actress Sasha Calle (The Young and the Restless; Socially Awkward) has been cast as Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl, in his highly-anticipated superhero movie, The Flash.

Muschietti, along with DC Films head honcho Walter Hamada and the producers, were all reportedly blown away by Calle's audition, praising her toughness and vulnerability as she brought this new Girl of Steel to life.

The director says, “I saw more than four hundred auditions. The US, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.

While none of the actresses were aware of the part they were reading for until very late in the process, the finalists did a chemistry read over Zoom with the film's leading man, Ezra Miller.

The 22-year-old Calle will now become the first Latina actress to portray the iconic character, following in the footsteps of Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 movie, Laura Vandervoort, who played her on Smallville, and the fan-favorite Melissa Benoist, who currently plays her on The CW series that's set to finish up after this coming season.

She joins an all-star cast headlined by Miller and consisting of Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman (2016), and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman (1989).

The Flash is expected to begin shooting imminently, and the film is currently set to zip into theaters on November 4, 2022.

I guess this kinda fits with the rumors of DC wanting to push forward with Supergirl in the movies. Didn’t see this coming at all though. So any chance of Cavill getting replaced by a Latino actor?
