A North American trailer for the Arabic animated film Bilal: A New Breed of Hero has been released. The film is based on the true story of Bilal, a boy abducted into slavery who grows up to become a great warrior who inspires those around him.

The film became a hit at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, winning the award for "The Best Inspiring Movie" and has received global critical acclaim.

Bilal: A New Breed of Hero stars Ian McShane, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and China Anne McClain, and is set for U.S. release on February 2, 2018.

1,400 years ago, Bilal, a seven-year-old boy, with a dream of becoming a great warrior, is abducted into slavery with his sister and taken to a land far away from his home and thrown into a world where corruption and injustice rule all. Throughout his life he undergoes many hardships, through which he discovers an inner strength he did not realize he possessed. Through these experiences, Bilal comes to realize that if he is brave enough to raise his voice and choose his own path - everything becomes possible. It is through his courage, that he frees himself and ultimately his community; It is through the power of his voice and faith that his lifelong dream of freedom comes true. Bilal grows into a man who will inspire the world.

The animation style was really well done. Interesting to do basically a biopic in animation, but it's about time that animation isn't just a kid centric medium.

@batmbl - I think it looks good for coming from a smaller studio. I personally prefer animation to have more of a stylistic flair to it, though. When it attempts a photorealistic look it feels like it would be better in live action, but when it utilizes the aesthetic strength of the medium to do something more unique, it creates a world that's entirely its own.

I had no idea this hadn't been released in the US yet. It was good. The tone is more 9, Princess Mononoke or Iron Giant than regular Disney or Pixar stuff, but it's a small movie from a small studio. It looks a bit empty and nothing about it is surprising, but it's a beautiful story.

On a related note, remember Fox Animation before it went bankrupt? Titan AE? Anastasia? Now that was the good stuff.

@Fogs - just checked and Bilau is as well. Must be brazillian portuguese.
But pilau is a childish way of saying it in Portugal.

Spot light on Libya as well as Saudi and gulf states inslaving Africans till this very day. Libya being IN Africa is even more ridiculous. After the CIA with Hillary and Obama stupidly got rid of Ghadafi because the banks convinced them to do so. Now slavery in Libya, tribal chaos, no government,a big ass mess. Now, Europe will be overrun with terrorists and people looking for refuge. Ghadafi wasn't an angel but he was a great leader who finally figured it out and became a proud African tried to unite Africa.

This animation coming around close to Black Panther is well needed.

Bilal was one of the most trusted and loyal Sahabah (companions) of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was born in Mecca and is considered as the first muezzin, chosen by Muhammad himself. He was known for his beautiful voice with which he called people to their prayers.

I hope they stay true to his story
