First TOM & JERRY Movie Concept Art Surfaces For The Planned Live-Action/Animation Hybrid

Warner Bros. is currently developing a Tom & Jerry movie which will be a live-action/animated hybrid, and now some concept art for the project has found its way online revealing some surprising details...

As you're no doubt well aware, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a live-action/animated Tom & Jerry movie featuring real actors alongside the iconic cartoon enemies. Whether they'll look photorealistic or like their old school 'toon incarnations has been something of a mystery up until now, but this newly surfaced piece of concept art may shed some light on that.

As you can see, it features Tom and Jerry alongside Jennifer Lawrence and while that doesn't mean she'll star in the movie (as is pointed out below), it does confirm that Tim Story (Fantastic Four) is looking for a female lead, and that the cat and mouse will look like their classic selves rather than along the lines of that freakish version of Sonic which has been doing the rounds lately.

A release date hasn't been set and we've heard nothing about an actual cast being assembled for the movie so it's clearly still early days for Tom & Jerry, but this artwork is definitely a good start.

Live-action/animated hybrids have something of a spotty track record (just look at Garfield or Alvin & The Chipmunks) but Tom & Jerry has potential and it will be interesting to see how it comes together from here. What do you guys think of this first look?

Damn Detective Pikachu is not even out yet and it's already creating a trend.

@L0RDbuckethead - I thought of Roger Rabbit and Space Jam, even Cool World but those are just cartoons interacting with people, not "live action". The first film to attempt to "realistically" create the cartoon characters as "life like" and claim the movie is live action was Scooby.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 1/29/2019, 9:42 AM
@ArthurFleck - Seriously... Casper, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Garfield, the Smurfs, Yogi Bear, Woody Woodpecker, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Paddington, Christopher Robin... It's a long list of cartoonish characters brought to life with CGI mingling with live actors.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 9:43 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - even though it appears this Tom and Jerry movie is as they say a live action/animation hybrid like Roger Rabbit, I was basing my response off of the OP saying Detective Pikachu started a trend.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 9:46 AM
@Chewtoy - only ones you mentioned that came before Scooby was Casper and Rocky and Bulwinkle and those were just CGI models of their cartoon characters, no texture and very cartoonish still. But after Scooby Doo live action movie was a hit every studio tried making live action versions of cartoons.
Origame
Origame - 1/29/2019, 9:50 AM
@ArthurFleck - yeah but thats not what they're doing here. They're clearly trying a roger rabbit approach of cartoons in our world as opposed to trying to make versions of these characters that make sense for a real world.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 1/29/2019, 9:57 AM
@ArthurFleck - I strongly disagree.

@L0RDbuckethead - you strongly disagree with what?
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 1/29/2019, 10:02 AM
@ArthurFleck - I hadn't been overly concerned about who was first, but rather just pointing out that there have been plenty of variations on the theme before Pokemon in agreement with you.

Looking at it, I'm not entirely sure I'd go along with hair texture as being the dividing line in what was first among these movies though. The Casper characters were just supposed to be what ghosts looked like (especially after Ghostbusters), done up in enough CGI effects to pass as being "real" ghosts alongside human actors.

Is it good by today's standards? No. But the intent to have the characters be recognizable and yet "realistic" enough alongside humans was there, I think.

Scooby is a bit less stylized than his cartoon counterpart, but not enough to pass as a real Great Dane by comparison. So I'm not sure that's a big enough leap to be a whole different thing, myself... but if others want to define it that way, that's fine too.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:08 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - I mean if the only requirement is cartoons interacting with real people then...

:cough cough:

Or even...

:cough cough:

I'm sure there are instances that even predate Disney. But what I was referring to was the original posters comment that Detective Pikachu started a trend, and my response was to say the Detective Pikachu formula really started with Scooby Doo which officially kicked off the modern trend of cgi live action cartoon character movies. After Scooby Doo, the flood gates opened and we got Garfield and Smurfs and you name it. But cartoons interacting with live action definitely predates Scooby obviously.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:15 AM
@Chewtoy - meh, I guess I could give you Casper. To me they always looked just like 3d models of the cartoon, closer to Space Jam vibe than anything but I guess you are right. For the time that was probably the best they could do. But idk if it started a trend. Casper was made in 95 and the next "live action" adaptation wouldn't be till 5 years later with Rocky and Bullwinkle but I definitely dont count that because they were straight up cell shaded and were just cartoon characters. The next was Scooby in 2002 and that movie was so successful in my mind it started the trend of every studio trying to adapt cartoons into live action. But I suppose this is all semantics and opinion.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 1/29/2019, 10:30 AM
@ArthurFleck - Your first comment about Scooby Doo being the "first".
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 1/29/2019, 10:33 AM
@ArthurFleck - I take your point as to which should be given credit as the trendsetter being separate from which counts as the "first" of these, definitely.

I also agree, this question is not the hill I'm going to war to die on, either. Although I enjoy the idea that somewhere on the internet, seething Scooby and Casper fans are at each other's throats.

(Personally, I never saw Casper, and didn't like the Scooby Doo film. Scooby Doo 2 was all right though.)
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 1/29/2019, 10:35 AM
@ArthurFleck - Well then you shouldn't have claimed Scooby Doo as the first to attempt to re-create Scooby Doo as '"lifelike". I mean, Roger rabbit isn't lifelike, but what about Jessica Rabbit?

You're trying to pigeonhole that awful Scooby Doo movie from the 2000s as being responsible for starting some trend of live-action / CGI hybrid films, when it simply isn't true. Scooby Doo looks pretty far from "lifelike" in that film, IMO, too.

Just let it go, man. No need to be rude to people because they disagree with you. But you are wrong, in this instance.

@mastakilla39 -
Detective Pikachu has potential to start a much bigger trend; Live Action Anime movies that are good.

If Detective Pikachu does well they will likely test the waters with the live action 'My Hero Academia' (Legendary Entertainment) which would appeal to the general audience who like CBM's - at that stage you would have Live Action Anime Superheroes paving the way for anime to be adapted along the lines of Dragon Ball Z (Fox/Disney) or One Punch Man.

Live Action Superhero Anime could start a birth of Live Action Anime films to rival the MCU in terms of a franchise.

ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:41 AM
@Chewtoy - right lol I feel you on that. I'm not trying to go to war with anybody over this and I definitely get everyone's points. The fact this thread has gone on this long is pretty funny. And I haven't watched any of the live action cartoon movies in like 15 years but from what I remember I think I enjoyed Casper most of all but I never considered that live action for the reasons I stated above. The ghosts just looked like CGI cartoon characters interacting with people. But Scooby was the first one I remember thinking ok they are actually putting a ton of attention to detail in Scoobys model to make it feel living and real, and the live action cartoon trend definitely exploded after Scooby Doo.

But yeah, this topic has gone on a bit too long so imma lay it to rest too lol
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:43 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - for sure man. I understand your point, but I also respectfully disagree with you. So, it's all good brother.

@L0RDbuckethead - please point out where I was rude, my brother.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 1/29/2019, 10:47 AM
@Scarilian - We're still waiting on an actually good, successful video game film adaptation, aren't we? So there's some ground for Detective Pokemon to claim as well.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 1/29/2019, 10:48 AM
@ArthurFleck - OK, just know that Scooby Doo didn't start some trend. Just because you saw it when it came out and saw live-action/CGI hybrid fiilms follow, doesn't make it the "trendsetter" you claim it to be.

Your quote: "ut Scooby was the first one I remember thinking ok they are actually putting a ton of attention to detail in Scoobys model to make it feel living and real, and the live action cartoon trend definitely exploded after Scooby Doo."

Just because you say that and that's how you feel about the film, doesn't make it true.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:48 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - I make it a point to not be rude on here, so I'd appreciate it if you check that kinda talk about me at the door. Our opinions may differ and you may be getting upset at me for debating you, but I'm only expressing my opinion like you are. I dont think you've been rude by disagreeing with me, so I'm curious where this accusation of me being rude is stemming from.
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 10:49 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - lol alright man. You have a good day.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 1/29/2019, 10:50 AM
@ArthurFleck - Your little retort with the two examples that predate Disney. "Check that talk at the door" who are you, my mother?

Yes, but you're expressing your opinion as FACT, which isn't true.

ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 11:17 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - lol dude chill. You are getting way too sensitive. My "retort" was

"I mean if the only requirement is cartoons interacting with real people then..." then I showed 2 examples that made my point. How was that rude? Lmao

And I've provided dates, reasons and examples to back up my opinions. You simply say you disagree then cry I'm being rude when I'm just making valid points that hurt your argument.

And you have provided nothing. And you continue to elevate the hostility of this encounter each time you reply.

I really dont mind that you disagree. But now you are becoming a burden and I'm done trying to speak to you with civility so that means I'm just done speaking to you. If I stick around any longer I will become rude and I'm not giving you the satisfaction.

So once again, have a good day man.

SabreToof
SabreToof - 1/29/2019, 1:01 PM
@ArthurFleck - Not the same. Scooby was CGIed in to be a real talking dog, not a cartoon dog.
Tom and Jerry look like cartoon characters interacting with real humans.
SabreToof
SabreToof - 1/29/2019, 1:03 PM
@ArthurFleck - In Detective Pikachu, Pikachu looks like a CGI video game character interacting with live action humans.
four20smoke
four20smoke - 1/29/2019, 1:26 PM
@Scarilian - Give me dragon ball live action now!! Just hope they dont get ahead of themselves and start with them older and mixing stories. Do a kid/teen/young adult goku trilogy with the last movie being the vegeta saga. Next trilogy can be freiza, cell and buu. Next is Super....
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/29/2019, 1:44 PM
@Skinwalker - lol nice try but no. You realized your own mistake and tried to correct your point but just contradicted yourself. The designs of the Pokemon are extremely faithful to the cartoon designs but they are designed in the movie to be real animals, real pokemon. They arent cartoons lol they have fur that moves, realistic eyes and textures meant to indicate they are real creatures, just like Scooby and you know it lol

But in regards to your original post, as I've said a number of times and I'm tired of repeating myself, it's all right up there if you just go and read it, my response to the original poster comment was only that Detective Pikachu isnt the start of the "live action" cartoon characters trend and it really became a popular genre in the 2000s when Scooby Doo was a hit. It's the only "live action" cartoon movie which had a big budget big screen sequel with returning stars, it made the studio money and inspired more "live action" cartoon movies of the like. Hollywood doesn't take big risks, it waits till something is successful and turns a profit and then everyone gets in on the action. Just like there were comic book movies and shared cinematic universes before the MCU, it wasnt until Marvel did it on a big scale and made tons of money that all of Hollywood began to capitalize on the popularity and the market became saturated.

So one final time for the people in the back, MY ORIGINAL POST WAS IN RESPONSE TO DETECTIVE PIKACHU NOT SETTING THE TREND OF LIVE ACTION CARTOONS, IT DIDNT DIRECTLY HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS NEW TOM AND JERRY MOVIE.

Yes you are correct, as I've said above, the Tom and Jerry is a hybrid live action/animated film more like Roger Rabbit and other material I listed above.

But in regards to your second comment, Detective Pikachu definitely doesn't look like a video character interacting with live action humans, it looks like a Pokemon interacting with humans. I mean hes cgi, but that's irrelevant, hes intended to resemble a living breathing character, just like Scooby was.

@four20smoke - my brother, I've been wanting such live action Dragon Ball movies since I was knee high to my pops. To us fans it seems so simple, yet here we are still with no live action movies of quality. I feel you man.

@gulducati - The trend that the smurf and alvin and the chipmunks live action killed!
SabreToof
SabreToof - 2/7/2019, 1:30 PM
@ArthurFleck - Nope. Live-action for me is pokemon being shaped like real animals, not just having fur that moves like a Pikachu that looks like a real hybrid between a pika and a rabbit, not like a talking stuffed animal.
