GARFIELD: MCU Stars Chris Pratt And Samuel L. Jackson Play Father And Son In Trailer For Animated Reboot

Sony Pictures has shared the trailer for its upcoming Garfield reboot and, as well as introducing Chris Pratt's Baby Garfield, the teaser introduces Samuel L. Jackson as the Lasagne-loving feline's dad!

After a memorable turn as Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation, Chris Pratt became a Hollywood megastar after taking on lead roles in the Guardians of the GalaxyAvengers, and Jurassic World franchises.

Pratt has also made his mark in animation after lending his voice to The LEGO Movie, Pixar's Onward and, perhaps most controversially, The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Pratt managed to prove the haters wrong with his take on the iconic video game character, though Nintendo's mascot isn't the only household name he's set to bring to life on screen. Next up? Everyone's favourite lasagne-loving feline, Garfield.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for the Garfield movie (via Toonado.com), and...well, movie over Baby Groot and Baby Yoda: it's time for Baby Garfield to shine! The character's father - played by Samuel L. Jackson - also appears, as do franchise icons Jonathan and Odie. Like Mario, Pratt's Garfield sounds like, well, Chris Pratt; some will be fine with that, while others likely won't.

"Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt), the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure!" reads the official synopsis. "After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father - scruffy street cat Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) - Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist."

The movie is directed by Mark Dindal from a screenplay by Paul A. Kaplan & Mark Torgove and David Reynolds and is based on the Garfield characters created by Jim Davis. Alongside Pratt and Jackson, the cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang.

Last year, the Guardians of the Galaxy star took to Twitter/X to tease the project and said, "Get ready for some Garfield! Coming to theaters on President’s Day weekend 2024. Finally, a Monday you’re not going to hate! I have been deep in research on this one. Mostly eating lasagna. But also licking myself clean."

The release date has shifted from February 19, though, as social media posts for the U.S. version of the trailer lists Garfield as "Coming Soon" next summer. However, the UK version uploaded to YouTube lists May 24 as the movie's release date.

Take a look at the first trailer for Garfield in the players below.

Garfield’s dead beat dad who abandoned him as a child is voiced by a black man? 😳

@bobevanz - I felt his Mario was ok, but I would think Garfield should be someone with a more deadpan delivery.

@mountainman - Yeah, that's why Bill Murry will always be my Garfield, even though he never voiced him.

Chris Pratt as Mario, is/was an extremely uninspired decision, I'll never get why they did that aside from the actor's popularity, which should never be the final deciding factor.

@Blastaar - Bill Murray DID voice him in the live action films

@Asterisk - You're right, I forgot about that, that's why it stayed in my head and the animated cartoon voice sounded like Bill Murray too. Bill Murray isn't dead, if they want somebody new, they should get somebody with Bill Murray's cadence and deadpan comical style because it fits Garfield perfectly.

Again, this should've been nick offerman.

The animation looks absolutely beautiful. But I won't be seeing another soulless Chris Pratt vehicle. I'm tired of his voice playing essentially the same character. Nothing different from his Lego guy or his Mario. And even more of putting were those jokes. This doesn't look very good other than that animation looking sport crisp and clean.

@TheVandalore - Garfield really has never been that funny anyway. I know he was popular in the 80s and 90s but I don’t see this being a big hit.

I got excited and thought Jackson was playing Garfield, now I'm greatly disappointed

@KaptainKhaos - that would've been way funnier. With AI though, I'm sure someone can make the swap quickly

Pratt really is voicing everything from my childhood. Not that I mind though, Emmet and Mario were really well done imo. Now he only has to voice Donald Duck to complete the list

@bkmeijer1 - Pratt could actually do a good Launchpad McQuack.

Any other Italian cartoon characters left for Pratt to voice?

Garfield with Star-Lord's voice. This does not work.

But despite that, the movie doesn't look very good anyway.

started off nice, then just becomes terrible

Also Chris Pratt may have passed for Mario but he is not Garfield

Garfield sounds like Bill Murray not Burt Macklin

I love the Garfield Minus Garfield comics where they just remove him from the panels.

I am embarrassed by an opinion on this, but Bill Murray’s deadpan delivery fit the character far better
