Warner Brothers have today announced a release date for The Lego Movie spinoff which is due to feature characters from the Ninjago brand. the film will be released on Septemebrer 23rd 2016, one year earlier than The Lego Movie sequel which lands May 26th 2017.

Charlie bean is set to direct the film with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller producing. The Ninjago brand launched in 2011 and has already been adapted into a Cartoon Network TV animated series.

“The LEGO® Movie,” the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, opens in theaters February 7, 2014. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), it stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman. The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Good movie. Really reminded me of the writing of Terry Pratchett. The Ninjago short on the Lego Movie dvd was pretty funny, but a whole ninja lego movie, I'm not sold on that yet. There is also a music video for Everything is Awesome on the dvd, so your kids will run around the house singing that for weeks.

I personally think Lego Chima would have been more interesting. That being said I don't think this will do as well as the Lego movie. The reason why is because with the Lego movie it was the first time you got to see lots of your favorite Lego characters come to life and them all being in the same universe.

The Lego movie was also great for adults as it was for kids. But I just think this Ninjago movie will be more for kids. Plus really has there been lots of people that have been wanting to see the world of Ninjago brought to life? I could see people wanting to see the world of DC Comics or Middle Earth but really not this.

Plus would people that want to see the world of Ninjago brought to life really want it in Lego form or more of a cartoon. I personally think bringing out too many movies in Lego form is going to diminish the appeal of them. Maybe that's just me though. But I will say this I always thought one of the Lego brands that was the most popular was Bionicle. So I would have thought they would make a movie of that before other spin-offs.

Considering this will almost certainly take place in its own closed universe, Variety uses the word spin-off rather lightly. Especially as the tv show has been in existence for some time already.

@BlackIceJoe
Bionicle was discontinued half a decade ago, it's time has passed.
