THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE Has An Even Shorter Runtime Than SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

The Super Mario Bros. Movie's surprisingly short runtime has been revealed ahead of its release later this year, and it's going to be a surprisingly brief adventure for the iconic video game plumber...

Thanks to the Irish Film Classification Office (via Toonado.com), we now know that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will clock in at a mere 1 hour and 32 minutes.

That's a pretty short runtime, and quite the contrast to recent titles like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DC League of Super-Pets, and Lightyear. However, it's actually pretty normal for Illumination as most of their movies tend to land around the 90-minute mark, with Sing and its sequel the exception to the rule.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also going to be a whole 7 minutes shorter than the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and we now expect this to be a relatively breezy adventure for Mario and company. That's not a bad thing and movies like these often benefit greatly from trimming the fat and telling a lean, to-the-point story.

From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.

It's not the length of the movie, it's the quality of the performance.

I remember about ten years ago I sat down and watched The Lion King for the first time since seeing it as a kid… and that movie is super short. 87 minutes. Some movies benefit from being long, and others being short. And also, I don’t know a ton of kids with long attention spans.

The first sonic movie was a good runtime, the second dragged big time towards the end. I'm fine with this

@bobevanz - it's the voice cast that's the depressing part

@bobevanz - Honestly if Sonic 2 was two hours and focused more on the backstories of Tails and Knuckles I don't think anyone would of had a problem. The additional 20 minute Bridezilla subplot that was put at the start of the third act though... yeah that's the "why in the hell is this in the movie?" that makes it feel like it drags. I mean I still like Sonic 2 and feel it does some things better then the first movie but I really want to know why in the hell was that scene left in the movie and why it was even crafted in the first place. Was that done so female characters would do something in the movie or to have more of an excuse to shoot around the hotel or... someone wanted the human characters to nore contribute since yeah those stupid exlpanations are the only reason why that happened.

It should be pointed out 90 minutes is the typical time limit for any Illumination movie. The only ones signicantly longer are the Sing movies and I think those get a lpass for the leegth because of all the spent well sleeping and all.

Pretty normal runtime for a animated movie

There are a ton of great movies that clock in at around 90 minutes. Especially animated movies. So no worries (okay a little, if this is Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party and Luigi's Mansion in one)

The 20mins of commercials before the movie even starts will make up for it.

I'll just watch that commercial that used the 80s theme like fourteen times to make up the difference.
