Artist Phil Bourassa has posted several of his concept designs for Marvel's animated feature Thor: Tales of Asgard on his DeviantArt page. Bourassa's latest works include character designs for Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Planet Hulk, both of which you can view by visiting his page HERE.

Here are Mr. Bourassa's comments regarding the artwork:

"Development art for Tales of Asgard, an upcoming (eventual) release from Marvel Lionsgate.

An early take on a teenage Thor, the star of the film. I wanted to make Thor look really "level one" Viking/barbarian with lots of fur and layers. I gave him sort of a cocky self assured pose because thats his overall persona in the film. At the time I was pretty happy with this take and was kind of bummed that we went in a different direction with the outfit. The overall silhouette is still the same, although the details and colors are significantly changed.

I drew this in October of 2007."

This animated feature is set to be available in stores in 2011 to coincide with the release of Kenneth Branagh's live action Thor movie.

I wish that Marvel wasn't so obsessed with teenagers.

the only thing i dont like is the design of Thor's boots.
i have literally seen teenage girls wearing boots like those.
i know because of Thor's hair, some might make a feminine remark......
but any who know the character of Thor would never say it to his face.

That would usually be my sentiments, but this actually looks good. On top of that, unlike most heroes, Thor was still Thor when he was a kid so it isn't like Iron man where a teen version doesn't make sense.

This art is too derivative. Its basicly American Manga. A more mature/realistic style reminicent of Planet Hulk would be far more appropriate. I 've been all for the Disney/Marvel thing. I jusst hope Disney remembers that most folks that buy comics are 18-35 not 10-15.

Fandral looks cool but why are the warriors so much older than Thor and Loki? If these guys want to make their animation succesful like anime they should just copy comics panel for panel and fill in the gaps to make a movie...it's worked for Zack Snyder and most Anime

@juggy~ I think disney/marvel does know this. And I think they also know that no matter what design they use, the 18-35 who buy comics will continue to do so. That's why they're targeting the 10-15. So once they can afford to buy comics, they will.

I think this will be good. The preview that was with the Planet Hulk film showed a very arrogant Thor. Should be a nice vision of what Hemsworth's Thor will be like initially in the live action film.

This one could be good. I'm glad Marvel is finally picking themselves up with their animation movies. They might actually be a good competion with DC animation some day.

i personally think marvel has been on a role with animated movies for quite some time. hulk vs., planet hulk, dr. strange, they're all good, and ultimate avengers 2 is worth its salt simply on the basis of how they portrayed the black panther!

i know i'm in the minority, but i tend to like the marvel animated flicks a bit more (though some of the batman movies are REALLY good).

just an opinion, not fighting words

That art looks HORRIBLE! This is Liefeld-bad. I wouldn't want my name associated with anything this bad, even if I had the excuse of it being something I scrawled while I was drunk.

That "Thor" is completely out of proportion, which is why I compare to Liefeld. Look at how over-long the legs are. At least this guy can draw feet, and does so to cartoonishly oversized extremes. I'm not even getting on the "high school" appearance of the characters.

comicb00kguy, while everyone is entitled to their own opinions, yours are unfounded. Every single design looks jus fine to me, in fact, most of the stuff on Mr. Bourassa's site is awesome. So, unless you can do better, an have gotten jobs designing for not one, not two, but MORE animated features, STFU.
