Scoob! was released during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last May. Warner Bros. took the experimental approach of having it debut in theaters (well, the ones that were still open) at the same time as Digital platforms, and it started rolling out internationally later that summer.
As a result, the $26.3 million box office haul wasn't exactly indicative of the movie's quality, and it never got a chance to make the sort of impact Scooby-Doo and the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang usually would. Despite that, the studio must be pleased with its performance on Digital and physical platforms because director Tony Cervone has confirmed that a sequel is being developed.
We caught up with the prolific filmmaker to discuss his work on Space Jam during its 25th anniversary and ahead of the movie's release on 4K Blu-ray for the first time ever on July 6. We asked if he'd considered a sequel or prequel, and it was then Tony talked about the planned follow-up.
"Actually, we are kicking the tyres on a follow-up to Scoob!" he confirmed earlier today. "It hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s something we’re all excited about. The whole creative team that made the first movie is still around and back and working on something new. It was neat to create this Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, and it’s exciting to return to it."
This is great news for Scooby-Doo fans and it seems this "Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe" will now continue to expand with Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne taking centre stage.
As Tony mentioned, this Scoob! sequel hasn't been officially announced yet, but we'll hopefully get more news soon. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on these plans in the comments section.
