"During the last Great War, a man rose to become a hero. But then he betrayed his country to become a pirate. Is he truly an enemy of the state? Or its last great hope?"

Appleseed's Shinji Aramaki will direct the CG film which is said to reinterpret the themes in Leiji Matsumoto's 1977 manga for modern society. This film has Toei Animation's highest production budget ever which equates to about $30M U.S. and will be released to much fanfare in Japan on September 7, 2013. An international dub is currently in production for release in the US and the UK. Director James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) previously praised the series as, "Mythic, epic and visually unprecedented, Harlock will take you to a whole new universe of ideas."

"It is 2977 and for many years a mighty battle has been raging across the galaxies as 500 billion humans, whose forebears were exiled from Earth, plan to return to what is still called home. Forced to flee a ravaged Earth, humans have now depleted the corners of the galaxy to which they fled. Earth has now become the most valued and precious resource of all, controlled by the corrupt Gaia Coalition which governs the human race across the different galaxies.

Having been exiled and vilified during the battle of the Homecoming War, Captain Harlock and his trusted crew of the Arcadia, a Death Shadow Class battle cruiser, are the only hope mankind has of discovering the secrets that the Gaia have kept hidden. As the Arcadia roams the Universe boldly attacking and pilaging fugitive ships throughout the Coalition Territory, Captain Harlock strides defiantly forth in his tenacious drive for victory.

The Coalition has demanded Harlock’s death and the Gaia Fleet’s new leader, Ezra, calls on his younger brother, Logan, to infiltrate the Arcadia and then assassinate Harlock; thus forever eradicating the one man standing between the Coalition and their complete control of the Universe.

Logan must make a very personal sacrifice and discover that things are not always as they seem. All the while Captain Harlock and his crew will continue his mission, seeking revenge against the Coalition and establishing the return to Earth."

If I would know anything about this franchise, I would probably be excited. I think I once, when I was a kid, saw a picture of that pirate guy in cover of some magazine or was it a VHS tape, and that's all I know about this.

Japanese animation still reigns supreme...

American animation needs to step things up in a big way.

Oh yeah. Arcadia of My Youth! There was english dubbed Harlock movie called Vengeance of the Space Pirate when I was a kid. My dad and I saw it on tv. It was awesome. I was obsessed with Harlock for years. I was an artist and I used to draw my own variations of him for years and years because I couldn't find the movie or even the name of it (pre-internet days). It took me ten years to find the VHS (post internet), which I still have. It's classic epic japanimation from the 80's. The only thing that doesn't hold up well today is the music. It always had that cheesy romantic music. Great story though. This looks like almost exactly what I have on VHS. I wish they'd just make a live action movie of it, but it would cost a fortune.

We need some DC and Marvel CG films like that!

And before you knock the designs and concepts of this keep in mind the character dates to the 1950's and first appeared in his own series of cartoon films starting the late 1970s and early 1980's. This "space carrier" designs were unbelievable back in the day. Like alot of great sc-fi from the 60s and 70s, you'll see Captian's Harlock influence in many of todays sci-fi on tv and film.

Sweet! Really looking forward to this! It's sad it's going to be slated and called derivative in the west, though.

Most people probably don't realise this character first appeared in the 1950s (although he didn't get his own show until the '70s.) hence some quite dated designs etc.

You're right. I usually get inspired by ship design but when I don't I also turn into a angry little bear with attitude.

A guarantee fact I know about the english dub of this...

Nolan North and Steve Blum's voices will be somewhere in this movie

with that said I hope either David Hayter or Steve Blum voice Harlock...idk why but i feel like 1 of those 2 voices would suit him
