Death Note: Shane Black to Direct Adaptation of Manga

Death Note: Shane Black to Direct Adaptation of Manga

Deadline is reporting that Shane Black (the man who wrote the original Lethal Weapon, among many other things) will serve as director of Death Note, based on Manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata.

The script is being written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, who have also written the forthcoming Doc Savage for Black as well.

Describes Deadline, "Death Note was originally published in Japan and later collected in 12 trade paperbacks that have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide. The protagonist, Light, is a bright student who stumbles across a mystical notebook that has the power to kill any person whose name he writes in it. Light decides to launch a secret crusade to rid the streets of criminals. Soon, the student-turned-vigilante finds himself pursued by a famous FBI criminal profiler known only by the alias L."

The story has been adapted before as an animated TV series, live action and animated films, videogames and novels.

“It’s my favorite Manga, I was just struck by its unique and brilliant sensibility,” Black said. “What we want to do is take it back to that Manga, and make it closer to what is so complex and truthful about the spirituality of the story, versus taking the concept and trying to copy it as an American thriller."

well it's in safe hands, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was great fun movie, let's hope this is the beginning of Hollywood taking manga/anime seriously, and not half attempts such as DBE. By the way any one expecting asain cast I highly doubt thats going to happen

I wonder if this will follow the manga or be a remake of the movie?I'm mostly wondering about the character of L.I like the fate of his character in the film, but not in the manga.

They actually made 3 live action versions of the series. I have watched the first two and thought they did a pretty good job for what it was. American remakes on the other hand is a whole other ballgame. I don't put a lot of faith in their translating manga/anime to the big screen very well.

This is funny. I was just thinking to myself, what the talented Shane Black was doing since Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I've not seen much of Death Note but from the sounds of it it is a very series.

This is thinking outside the box for sure. Choosing Shane Black I mean but I like his answers in the interview and I hope he does it justice and also doesn't bow down to any kind of executive meddling.

Zac Efron would be perfect for the role of Light. If done right it would be his career defining role.

I love Death Note. I saw the live action movies from Japan and they were great despite the poor special effects. I hope the effects will be better in the American version.

if zac efron wants to break his boy next door image it's now or never ....

- world wide licence , he will even reach asia markets (although one could muse how the japanese will take
that Hollywood once again feels the need to remake their movie .... but for once there is some reason . the japanese dude who played the part just looks nothing like light . Can't blame him , it's just that while his mother , sister and to a less extent father have the characteristic japanese look , light doesn't look like japanese at all . ) ,
-very controversial character : hannibal lecter level. I'not saying that he will bring back an oscar ,seems a bit far fetched this early and considering the source material , but if he pulls it off it will sure make a ruckus ... and who knows... who would 've guessed ledger would have won an oscar with a comic book movie ?
-last but not least , obviously the guy is just the living incarnation of light... can't remember the last time an actor was so strikingly look alike to a character .

Now would he have the acting chops to play both the mask and the sociopath killer behind the mask ... that 's a hard one ... I m not even sure that light madness would translate well on screen , it could like a nicolas cage rant if he screws. And of course the production and direction choice have a huge part too in the success....

Oh and fincher would have been a better choice as director ... deathnote trademark is all about visual gimmick , music ambiance , dark-edgy style , all of which fincher is very fond of...

shane black is directing and supervising the script development - we could really have something here. Like his views on how the story should be treated.

Efron? Hmmm maybe they should look at other young actors. thomas dekker interesting possibility, maybe Logan Lerman. Trickier to cast L. My favorite at this point would be Joe Gordon Levitt but Jesse Eisenberg may be able to capture L's quirky character too. Can't wait to see how the shinigamis will look.

Hollywood, this is your chance to come with a great anime-based film. No Speedracer please

Death Note is one of my favorite animes of all time, and it sounds like he will be respectful to the source material, but who knows this could be another Dragonball Evolution, we'll see what happens.
