No one had much faith in a live-action Pokemon movie actually being any good, but Detective Pikachu exceeded expectations and there's now a lot of excitement about what comes next for this world on the big screen (with any luck, that will involve an appearance from Ash Ketchum).

Time will tell on that front, but for now a new batch of concept art from Detective Pikachu has been revealed thanks to artist R.J. Palmer. As you can see below, we kick things off with an epic battle between Charizard and Gyarados before delving into a Pokemon Museum that didn't make the final cut and alternate designs for a number of fan-favourite creatures.

They include the movie's titular detective along with the likes of Arcanine, Charizard, and Venusaur.

If you're a Pokemon fan or simply just enjoyed the movie, these are well worth checking out and really shed some light on the process that went into bringing these video game characters into a live-action setting. So, to see the entire gallery, simply hit that "View List" button down below.

This was the last design I worked on before Pikachu was handed off to MPC/Framestore. I'm very fond of how this one came out.

This was much earlier, one of the first few things I did on the project.

This was the final of 4 charizard designs I did on Detective Pikachu. I was super proud of how this one came out. I tried very hard to match the look of 3D sculpt concept art with my 2D skills.

This was one that never got finished, my 3rd attempt. This was my attempt to really bring the character to the real world for my specific tastes.

This was during a period when we were trying to trace over the Ken Sugimori art to stay more true to the original proportions.

This was the very first thing I did on the movie. A lot more naturalistic than the direction we ended up at. I think the final effects knocked it out of the park.

This was an exploration to see if Venusaur could work in the more temperate setting of the UK. So I changed the more tropical flower into mushrooms.

The ancient Pokemon war from Pokemon X&Y done as a frieze for the museum.

More statues for the museum depiction some deific Pokemon.

The first version I tackled. It was going to be Tim's Pokemon so I gave it the tongue sticky out thing my doofus cat does.
