The Pokémon franchise is heading down a new route, bidding farewell to 10-year-old Ash Ketchum more than 25 years after he was first introduced.

In its place will be Pokémon Horizons: The Series, a show that puts the spotlight on a brand new cast of characters. Liko and Roy will be the main protagonists, and seeing this world through their eyes promises to serve as a great entry point for younger/newer fans and something fresh for those who have followed this franchise since the beginning.

Now, we have a trailer (via AnimeMojo.com) for the next iteration of Pokémon, and there's plenty here for longtime fans to get excited about.

In the show, dual protagonists Liko, whose partner Pokémon is Sprigatito, and Roy will encounter many characters during their journey, including a group led by Friede and Captain Pikachu called the Rising Volt Tacklers.

Travelling across the Pokémon world on an airship, the Rising Volt Tacklers include Orla, who enjoys mechanical and electrical work and is accompanied by her partner Pokémon, Metagross; Murdock, who is skilled at cooking, and his partner Pokémon, Rockruff; Mollie, who specializes in healing treatments, and her partner Pokémon, Chansey; and Ludlow.

Liko and Roy will also come across Amethio, who is joined by his partner Pokémon, Ceruledge, and belongs to an organization called the Explorers, as well as a popular video streamer known as Nidothing.

"'Pokémon Horizons: The Series' is set to be a thrilling journey that explores new wonders and makes fascinating discoveries about the Pokémon world," Taito Okiura, Vice President of Marketing for The Pokémon Company International, said in a statement today.

"The latest 'Pokémon Horizons: The Series' trailer sheds further light on the mysterious adventures that await Liko and Roy," he continued, "and we invite Trainers to join in unravelling these secrets when the series begins premiering outside of Japan later this year."

Check out the trailer for the upcoming Pokémon series below.

@zeon00 - Nope
PiB - Antonio Banderas - He's spanish and so is his character (not the supporting cast tho)
Pokemon scarlet and violet (where sprigatito and other new pokemons come from) are set in Paldea, which is based on Spain (and sometimes Portugal tbh)

@zeon00 - He isn't, and there are multiple references to Spain, I think he even mentions Madrid in Shrek 2. To cater to a broader audience (and let's be honest, because many don't know the difference) there are latin american references and supporting cast, but Puss is still meant to be a spaniard.

I'm very interested to see how this goes. It's a bold move to retire your main protagonist 26 years into a franchise. Then again I think it's only a matter of time before Ash and Pikachu return, perhaps not as the protagonists or even as main cast members, but certainly in guest appearances.

I think we're 3 years away from the 30th anniversary of the overall franchise (before anyone says my maths is off, the anime started a year after the games were released in Japan) so I wouldn't be surprised if Ash and Pikachu make a big return to the anime for a guest appearance to mark the occasion.
