Kamen Rider Den-O's Takeru Satoh to star with Ryōmaden director Keishi Ōtomo

22-year-old actor Takeru Satoh (Kamen Rider Den-O, Rookies, Beck, Ryōmaden) will star in a live-action film adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin samurai manga for next year. Keishi Ōtomo will direct Satoh on this new film, just as he did in last year's NHK television series Ryōmaden.

Sankei Sports adds that the staff aims to release the film internationally and eventually make a series. This will be the first live-action adaptation of the manga.

Producer Shinzō Matsuhashi commented, "Satoh has the looks and stature to be a proper Kenshin." Watsuki added when this project was just starting, he and his wife were discussing who should play Kenshin, and decided that Satoh topped the list.

Nobuhiro Watsuki's original 1994-1999 manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and the resulting 28 compiled books volumes have 50 million copies in print. The manga inspired a television anime series that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Viz Media published the manga in North America, and Media Blasters' AnimeWorks label released the television anime.

ADV Films released two later original video anime projects and a film on DVD, and Aniplex is releasing these three titles on Blu-ray Disc this year. in April, Shueisha announced that a new Rurouni Kenshin anime project has been green-lit.

This is hands down the best kiddie-anime out there. Kenshin's pledge not to kill, his reverse blade sword, his naturally submissive disposition and mostly clueless love-life made for some of the best stuff the art-form has to offer. And it changes seemlessly into adult material.

I'm very hopeful for this one

So, the same guy that developed the Manga is doing the film?? Am I reading this correctly? 'Cuz if I am, I'm going to be one happy dude. If they DO make this film, they should start it with Kenshin's prequel movie: Trust and Betrayal. That movie was one of the BEST animes I've ever seen. Straight superb.

This should be interesting. I watched the anime when I was a kid and thought it was really cool. I never forgot the beautiful artwork and the crazy fight scenes with the reverse blade and that huge sword that cool guy used to carry around. Unfortunately I forgot their names, but the visuals are still fresh in my memory.

I hope they make the guy playing Kenshin have red hair. Hope it's good and it gets released here in the states.

Is it gonna be filmed in English or in Japanese? I'm assuming Japanese?

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY: I know who Kenshin is, I'm talking about the guy that he met a few episodes into the show. The guy with the big giant sword that he wraps in that white cloth thing, and he wears white and has brown spikey hair. Sanosuke! That's his name! I just googled it.
And sorry no, I'm taken. lol

Would be interesting to see how it pans out... I'll reserve judgment until i see it. First of all i'm glad that its WB Japan and not US. Sorry U.S. but all of the anime-based movies you've re-made have been bad (ahem Dragon Ball Z *cough cough*)As a huge Rurouni Kenshin fan myself I do hope they remain true to the manga, anime and even the first OVAs (except Reflection which I thought was the biggest injustice to Kenshin fans EVER)

Hopefully Nobuhiro Watsuki himself will be more "hands on" than he was when Reflection was made. I think they will focus on the "Shinta" era or pretty much the first part of the OVAs (as Jer3miah said) as I read they plan to make a series of movies.

Secondly, I hope they make it bloody... because it needs to be. its important to the character development of kenshin and his decision to later become a wanderer.

Lastly, super excited for this one to come out! I'd kill to be part of this! (pun not intended)whew! that was a long comment...
