ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Won't Reveal Identity Of Sonny Burch's Mysterious "Benefactor"

With Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania set to pit the heroes against Kang the Conqueror, you probably won't be surprised to learn that Sonny Burch subplot is going to be sidelined for the time being...

As fans, we sometimes focus on things in comic book movies that don't ultimately end up meaning too much. Whether it's those devil references in WandaVision or Mac Gargan's introduction in Spider-Man: Homecoming, subplots that often appear important in the MCU often go nowhere...until they're occasionally revisited years later!

In 2018's Ant-Man and The Wasp, we met Sonny Burch, a black-market tech dealer who was intent on getting his hands on the Quantum Tunnel created by Hank Pym.

He was doing so on behalf of a mysterious "Benefactor," with fan theories ranging from Norman Osborn to The Leader and even M.O.D.O.K. Unfortunately, new comments from Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed suggest that the subplot won't be picked up on in the threequel.

"For that particular question, you may have to wait a little bit longer," he says in the video below. "I love Sonny Burch, I love Walton Goggins, who I cast in the movie."

"But yes, he was definitely sort of working in service of someone. I don’t know that we’ll answer that in this movie, because we have a lot of story to tell in the Quantum Realm in this movie," Reed continues. "I love that fans have theories about that."

It would be a terrible shame for an actor as talented as Goggins to be sidelined, while not making "The Benefactor" a bigger name from the comics feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully, this is something the filmmaker is able to circle back to in a possible Ant-Man 4!

In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is set to be released in theaters on February 17, 2023.

That’s fine. Everything doesn’t need to be a set up for something else

They don’t even know…

@GhostDog - it's how the mcu has always operated. It's one of those things that make it seem more well thought out than it actually is.

I have a feeling his benefactor may be Count Nefaria, he's already known for having worked with another Ant-Man villain in the comics (Whirlwind) and Nefaria's whole thing is wanting to gain superpowers through means of shady tech. But in terms of where I want the Ant-Man franchise to go after this, let Scott retire after Secret Wars and introduce Eric O'Grady as the new MCU Ant-Man. And I want Eric to be as douchey, pervy, and self-centered as Robert Kirkman intended him to be. I mean he literally spied on Carol Danvers in the shower once...

@Goldboink - Yeah, honestly Disney-Marvel doesn't have the balls for Eric but damn I really wanna see him be a dick to everyone in the MCU.

To me, this reads like they do already know who the Benefactor is going to be, and that it's going to be someone important.
