ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Review Roundup - Phase 5 Is Off To A Fun, But Shaky Start

The review embargo for Marvel Studios' first Phase 5 film has now lifted, and you can find out what critics made of Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania right here...

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to hit theaters this weekend, and the review embargo has now lifted. Although the social media reactions were (mostly) positive, they're very rarely a strong indicator of what to expect, and critics have now weighed-in with more in-depth verdicts on Marvel Studios' first Phase 5 film.

So, what's the consensus? Well, reviews are still coming in, but Peyton Reed's threequel currently sits at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes with 71 reviews counted (that score will fluctuate, of course).

From what we can gather, Quantumania is an enjoyable enough sci-fi adventure with likeable leads and a strong villain in Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror, but most of the reviews seem to take issue with the generic plot, hackneyed dialogue, and general lack of engagement with the story/characters.

Another common criticism is how poorly realized the Quantum Realm is, and, yet again, many felt the visual FX were sub-par.

Our own Rohan Patel was impressed, calling Quantumania the "Best Ant-Man film yet and a strong start to Phase 5." But Why Tho also enjoyed it, awarding 8/10: "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brings the pint-sized hero’s trilogy to a close, supersizing the action without skimping on the emotion."

In the mixed-positive category, we have a 3/4 from Awards Radar, who says "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a science fiction heavy adventure that continues the introduction of Kang, while merging the MCU with a Star Wars and even Rick and Morty vibe." Screen Crush, meanwhile, believes "Your reaction will probably be determined by what you want out of the movie," and gives it a 6/10.

The Seattle Times... not quite so generous: "Prepare to be slammed by special effects, hammered by an ear-battering soundtrack. Oh, and you’ll be left mewling for mercy after an onslaught of Truly Bad Dialogue." Likewise, the New York Post, with a 2 star verdict: "Sorry to Raid on your parade, “Ant-Man” fans, but the third chapter is a pile of dirt."

I didn't get a chance to write-up a full review yet, but you can check out my Twitter reaction below.

@thewanderer - So by your logic Infinity War was pretty bad lol.

@Typhoon20 - these movies aren't made for critics approval. If critics happen to also like them, yay, but Marvel's not making their movies to meet critics' criteria of a good film.

Critics are paid to review films, which means most times they are reviewing a movie they otherwise never would have gone to see. There's an inherent bias from the start.

Star Wars vibe of this still has me interested as well as the more serious tonal shift.

Kang and Kathryn Newton were pretty much the only things that excited me about this film. Judging from the reviews, it's mostly just weird and trippy for the sake of being weird and trippy, typical cringe MCU humor that goes on for way too long, and actors giving it their all trying to save this film.

Sounds like this one will be divisive...

To be honest I was never expecting much, but I always expected a pretty VFX heavy third act to numb the brain.

At least Kang is well recieved. Will wait for the D+ release.

@UniqNo - The CGI third act is always a guaranteed in the MCU now. *sigh*

@FilmGuy7878 - I found Wakanda Forever's a bit better, especially when compared the UNFINISHED (not shit, to go easy on the artist) VFX IN THE 2018 Black Panther.

Taking him to a deserted island, and the stuff on the carrier/ sea was a bit more isolated than all over the place... otherwise yeah...

The trailer makes it seem though that 90% of the movie was shot green/blue screen.

@UniqNo - Yeah I loved the one-on-one Shuri vs Namor fight on the beach. That's what Marvel SHOULD be doing more of if they want compelling third act battles.

@FilmGuy7878 - Absolutely. WAY more tension than an army of useless CGI bots/aliens/whatever swarming all over the place.
