In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, we learned that Janet Van Dyne spent quite a bit of time in the Quantum Realm attempting to help Kang the Conqueror repair his Time Chair.
Unaware of his true nature, the original Wasp clearly bonded with her newfound ally and that's led to speculation that they may have grown...close. Yes, many fans are already shipping Kang and Janet (Kanet? Jang?), and the threequel's writer Jeff Loveness has gone some way in confirming those theories during a conversation with IGN.
"I mean, yeah you got Mr. Hunk over there all day, so mysterious. He's got his little orb. I mean, I don't know what's in that orb," the scribe joked. "I intentionally left it a little vague, but clearly – let's say they're very good friends [laughs]."
"And I think sometimes we're in kind of this YouTube reaction video world where everyone wants every little detail explained. And I don't think I ascribe to that. I think there's a magic in what is unsaid and what is not explicitly said."
"I love Jane Austen novels or English novels [that] are very sexually repressed. I'm sexually repressed. But I think there's a lot of strength in those types of relationships that could go either way. And maybe it did, maybe it didn't," Loveness continued. "Maybe that's a reason she didn't want to tell her family about it. That's part of it."
That last point is something that's been debated since Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was released, with many arguing that it made no sense for Janet to not tell her family about Kang's existence. After all, she sent Scott back into the Quantum Realm at the end of Ant-Man and The Wasp!
Loveness would elaborate on that point, explaining: "Maybe she didn't want to tell the family or the Avengers about it, because if they went down there, he would f***in' kill them. Or he would get their Pym Particles and get out. It's something that, it's like your grandpa talking about what happened to him in the Pacific Theater in 1944. Best not to bring it up."
"But yeah, maybe they had sex," he concluded. "Who knows?"
We're going to go ahead and guess that they did, especially as Kang seems to take Janet's portrayal so personally. Rumour has it she'll be key to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and with Loveness also writing that movie, answers could be on the horizon.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is currently playing in theaters.
