Avengers: Doomsday Watchlist: Every Movie Disney Says To Watch First (And The Baffling Omission)

Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday release this December, Disney+ has shared a watchlist of 15 Marvel titles that fans should watch, but one startling omission has generated quite the debate among fans.

Disney+ has published a 15-title watchlist designed to bring audiences up to speed before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters this December. While the selection covers everything from the original X-Men movies to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there is one particularly strange omission: 2023's The Marvels.

The list is made up of X-Men, X2, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Loki, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Captain America: Brave New World, Deadpool & Wolverine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

For the most part, it makes sense. The list establishes the original Avengers, introduces the Multiverse, brings in the Fox X-Men, and catches viewers up with several characters expected to play major roles in Avengers: Doomsday (we'd have swapped out Captain America: Brave New World for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but to each their own).

However, leaving out The Marvels is legitimately surprising given how important its post-credits scene seemed.

The movie ended with Monica Rambeau stranded in another universe after using her powers to help stabilise a collapsing wormhole. She subsequently woke up in a medical facility and encountered a variant of her mother, Maria Rambeau, now Binary. More importantly, Kelsey Grammer's Beast then walked into the room, seemingly confirming that Monica had landed on Earth-10005, the X-Men Universe.

That felt like a pretty obvious setup for Avengers: Doomsday. Instead, neither Teyonah Parris nor Lashana Lynch has been announced for the movie, even with Kelsey Grammer's Beast among the returning X-Men characters. Brie Larson's Captain Marvel is similarly absent from the cast, of course, which suggests The Marvels has been sidelined after flopping at the box office.

One increasingly popular theory is that the mother and daughter have perished in an Incursion before the events of Avengers: Doomsday. There has already been speculation that missing characters such as Jean Grey and Storm died while saving their reality, and the Russos have been deliberately vague when asked about the fates of absent X-Men.

Of course, Disney+ may simply be prioritising the movies and TV show most directly relevant to Avengers: Doomsday, rather than attempting to create a comprehensive MCU watchlist. Heck, this may have even been put together by some intern and isn't necessarily straight from the desk of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Still, putting X-Men and X2 on the list while excluding the movie that brought an Earth-616 hero to the X-Men Universe feels like a baffling choice. Either way, we'd expect Avengers: Doomsday to provide some answers this December.

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. The movie is set to be released on December 18.

Because Disney doesn't want you to suffer through The Marvels to watch a 30 second clip that truly will mean nothing when Doomsday arrives

@Irregular - I kind of liked the Marvels but that's my opinion.....all I know is after I see Doomsday, Secret Wars, and BP3....

@incredibleTalk - the marvels and Quantumania are vilified and in my opinion, wrongly so. Both are quality, entertaining, fun movies. The marvels was light years better than captain marvel and more engaging that Ms marvel, imo. Are both movies a bit silly? Absolutely. But what’s wrong with that?

@LenSpiderman - Watching Quantamania was,for me, like watching a Star Wars film, but with more likeable characters, so enjoyed more those.

The Marvels made me smile most of the time and it got a few laughs out of me (which was good, as it wasn't actually a comedy.

I liked Ms.Marvels's entire family and it was fun watching the cast working together.

I didn't have high expectations of either, so I wasn't disappointed.

@LSHF - TBH I use two standards with comic book movies: mine and my wife’s. I am more forgiving with something like civil war because I know the lore and sometimes just appreciate seeing it come to life or knowing where it’s all going. My wife is more of a sci-fi fan. After marvels and Quantumania we both agreed that we’d end up watching them again. My wife was giddy through all of Quantumania and I kinda was during the marvels. Theres plenty of MCU movies that aren’t worth a rewatch, but I don’t get why people hate these two so much.

@LenSpiderman - I can't relate to the hatred, but from these hateful comments I've read, it seems that the more love some people have for character/story, the the opposite they feel if it isn't what they wanted.

But since I quit reading comics in the early seventies, I've just been patiently waiting for live action adaptations of these heroes.

And since I have no strong love for comicbook lore, have no preferences and what bothers most people here doesn't bother me.

I'm just glad that after about three decades of waiting, we were finally getting live action super hero movies with larger than average budgets.

This period starting around the year 2000 has been the best movie going time of my life.

I feel no hatred, but mostly love. I can't afford to make these movies myself, so I'm glad that others are doing it.

Bad reviews, bad box office = MCU erasure

We'll likely see Brie as Captain Marvel one last time in Secret Wars, but that is probably it.

If you sit through The Marvels after half of the dogshit on that list, you'll not buy a ticket to DOOMSDAY.

This is the setup to kill the entire MCU and try to convince people that the reboot is going to be just as good with that fresh new X-MEN lineup.

Spider-Man BND actually looks really [frick]ing good - the suit is [frick]ing perfect and the CGI looks like they gave a [frick].

DOOMSDAY trailer looks like outtakes from ENDGAME and more green screen slop. THEY WILL LEARN NOTHING

@Batmangina - if I am to guess, Feige is scrambling to get a scene for Tom Holland to be included in Doomaday because of the BND success. An after credit scene or something.

Anyhow, i completely agree that Doomaday looks cheap. And the sad thing is blind fanboys will gobble it up like it's the 2nd coming of christ 🫠

Gee Josh. I often agree with you and often do not.

But you actually typed this:

(we'd have swapped out Captain America: Brave New World for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but to each their own).

However, leaving out The Marvels is legitimately surprising given how important its post-credits scene seemed.

F&WS was such a horrible pile of Hollywood punch you in the face terrible agenda garbage that spent all of its energy on that garbage and almost none on producing quality entertainment. And The Marvels is the worst movie the MCU has produced since its inception.

Of course they want to ignore and walk away from this junk.

I guess you could say I disagree with you on this one.
