Sebastian Stan Comments On Troubling Avengers: Doomsday Fan Speculation Concerning The Winter Soldier's Fate

Is Bucky Barnes doomed in Avengers: Doomsday? Sebastian Stan addresses rumors that Captain America's best friend will fall in the line of duty.

Splitting up Bucky and Sam after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a huge misstep by Marvel, and the studio might be further fumbling the MCU fandom's investment in Captain America's best friend in the next Avengers movie.

Actor Sebastian Stan is currently at TIFF to promote his upcoming film Fjord, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran is fielding all kinds of questions about his upcoming roles in Avengers: Doomsday and The Batman - Part 2.

When Entertainment Weekly caught up with The Winter Soldier, they focused on his upcoming appearance in Doomsday and the recent rumor that Bucky will meet his end when he crosses paths with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.

For his part, Sebstain played coy, declining to confirm or deny anything and stating that it's more fun to let the fans speculate.

"It's always wonderful to see passion, you know, to whatever movie it is," said Stan on the rumors swirling online about Bucky's fate. He continued, "We'll have to see, it's funny, isn't it. We have to learn to deal with uncertainty more than to not. It's fun to speculate but you want to be surprised, no?"

What do you make of Sebastian's comments? It's clear that he was carefully composing his answer in his head before saying anything, so as not to give away any spoilers.

The rumor from back in August states that Bucky's death at the hands of Doom is what triggers the Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and X-Men to finally unite but that seems a bit far-fetched given that the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and most of Sam Wilson's Avengers team have never met Bucky, let alone have any sort of emotional connection.

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Stephen McFeely, Avengers: Doomsday stars Downey, Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Wesley Holloway, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Alex Livinalli, and Mabel Cadena, with Tenoch Huerta Mejía.

The film is produced by Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz, with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer.

Wasted him completely after the show, everyone knows he should have been cap

If the agenda driven d!ckheads kill him, it is simply to cement bland FalCap in the role of CA.

@DocSpock - Falcon/Cap sucks but Bucky ain’t Cap either. Steve Rogers is Captain America like Bruce Wayne is Batman. Period. Changing that (same with Peter as Spidey) will NEVER work. There are very good reasons that these characters have endured for decades and it ain’t that they’re hero persona’s are just mantles

@DocSpock - what is this agenda of which you speak?

Yeah, he’s dead. I can deal with that, but if they kill off Steve and Peggy’s son, that would be way too dark and severely turn off a lot of both hard core and casual fans. Hopefully, that’s a fake out and Doom is using him Franklyn, and maybe some other gifted kids for some purpose on Battle World or easing them himself to be like him

@Bucky74 - No way that scene made it out of test screenings.

@Loohnutick - Which one? Because I though both test screenings confirm that they’re both killed

@Bucky74 -

Main permanent deaths are:

• Loki (Series version) - dies by having his heart ripped out. Doom keeps his heart in a glass box. This is done so they can replace that Loki with the original Phase 1-3 Loki who returns via the Valhalla reinforcements.

• Ant-Man - we know he dies, but no leaker seems to mention him. Due to narrative/emotional pacing it is very likely he dies during the Sentinel Battle, most likely going Giant Man and taking out the Sentinels putting them in the state we see when Doctor Doom puppets them.

• Winter Soldier - Is killed by Doctor Doom nearing the end of the second act, giving the team their second act low point. His death motivates the Thunderbolts and New Avengers to stop their petty squabbling and work together.

---
Steve's Son dies but is probably going to be undone at the end of Secret Wars as Steve goes back to being 'retired' keeping in continuity with Endgame. I expect Deadpool will recruit him for a 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' with Deadpool, Wolverine and Captain America which seems like the next logical step after Deadpool & Wolverine... just adding another hero that Deadpool goes fanatical over.

Some of the other deaths in Avengers: Doomsday, such as the X-Men, are rumored to be permanent as Doctor Doom only brings back those who originate from Earth-19999 (Main MCU) and Earth-828 (Fantastic Four) which is the final incursion locations. Anyone brought back lacks their memory.

Anyone else who survives the final incursion does so via 'Life Rafts' or other similar aspects which will be explained more in Avengers: secret Wars. These characters retain their memory and set about trying to recruit and remind the other heroes who they are. Non Earth-19999 Survivors are known to include Tobey Spider-man, Jackman Wolverine, Andrew Spider-man, America Chavez.

@Scarilian - Thanks. The one that really pisses me off is Steve and Peggy’s son. That’s way too dark. Hopefully, that’s u done by Secret Wars

Good response imo!!.

I could see Bucky dying in this since he has had his redemption arc and even acted as an elder statesman in Thunderbolts to the other newer heroes who had been searching for their own measure of redemption so if its a permenant end then as long as its emotionally impactful , it can work for me even though I wouldn’t want to lose him since i like the character.

Granted , he may show up in SW but that doesn’t necessarily mean he would be in the soft rebooted MCU after that though we’ll see!!.

Yeah, he’s dead in Doomsday, I’m sure it will be a heroic death though. He’s going to save someone important, to make up for all the people he killed.

Doesn't everyone who dies in Doomsday come back in BattleWorld anyway?

MCU's Battleworld is different, being comprised only of Earth-19999 (Main MCU) and Earth-828 (Fantastic Four). Doctor Doom as such only brings back people from those realities, anyone he brings back has no memory of the events of Avengers: Doomsday.

We will have 'Life Raft' heroes such as Tobey Spider-man, Jackman Wolverine, Andrew Spider-man, America Chavez and more who don't originate from Earth-19999 (Main MCU) OR Earth-828 (Fantastic Four) featured in Avengers: Secret Wars though.

Honestly....I have taken Bucky for granted. So much so...I honestly could not see him dying.

Killing Bucky would be a shame. He’s so underutilized as it is. Also, that bald look isn’t working but good on him for going all in.
