Avengers: Endgame returns to theaters this weekend, with additional footage meant to set up December's Avengers: Doomsday. Much has been said about what that will entail, and we now have detailed descriptions for you.
As expected, the 2019 blockbuster has a new ending. When Steve Rogers and Peggy kiss, rather than fading to black, they're shocked to hear a knock at the door. Steve hides around the corner while Peggy answers. The S.H.I.E.L.D. founder asks if she can help the man at the door, to which he replies, "I can help you. Both of you." It's Loki in his TVA uniform.
Steve emerges from the shadows and comes face-to-face with his old foe before the screen cuts to black.
In the first post-credits scene, we learn that Bruce Banner, now grey-haired and rocking a beard, has locked himself up in a military base miles beneath the earth. After what happened in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he's ensured that Hulk can't get out and no one can get in. Still, he yearns for freedom and explains in a video log that he's been working on new Gamma-suppression techniques.
Before Bruce can go any further, a green glow appears, and the screen goes black. "Who are you?" Banner wonders before Doctor Doom replies, "Mr. Banner. I'm here to collect you." We hear the Hulk's roar, and they both vanish, leaving us with only a glowing green sigil on the floor.
The second stinger takes us back to the Time Variant Authority. Mobius arrives at work, and we see what appears to be an "Employee of the Month" placard on the wall featuring Loki. Casy and O.B. reveal that an Incursion is taking place between Earth-10005 and Earth-1127, with the two realities firing missiles at each other (to destroy one planet before both collide).
Suddenly, more Incursions begin until there are thousands taking place. With that, TVA mainstay O.B. declares, "The Multiverse is collapsing."
The final stinger is perhaps the biggest surprise. Remember how at the end of Avengers: Endgame's credits we heard the noise of Iron Man forging his armour? Well, we now see that it was Doctor Doom forging his mask ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the movie features an epic ensemble which includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.
"Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece which not only delivers on every expectation you had but exceeds ones you didn't even think about. This isn't just a movie, it's an experience," we wrote in our 2019 review of the movie.
Avengers Endgame: Encore arrives in theaters on September 25.
