AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Has A Shot At Becoming The First Summer Blockbuster To Hit $2 Billion
Though several other films have managed to hit $2 billion worldwide, none of them were released during the summer months. However, it looks like Avengers: Infinity War has a good shot at being the first...
Avengers: Infinity War is still decimating the box office domestically and overseas, and if the Marvel epic continues on its current path, it could well become the first summer blockbuster in history to reach $2 billion.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Has Officially Become The Fastest Film Ever To Reach $1 Billion Worldwide
To date, only 3 movie have managed to hit that mega-milestone (Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens), but they all hit theaters over the year-end holidays when many kids are off school and adults have taken time off work. The only summer tentpole to even get close to $2B is Universal's Jurassic World, which raked in $1.672 billion.
Avengers: Infinity War made $1.164B over the course of its first 2 weeks on release, which means it has a good shot of hitting - or at least coming close to - $2 billion by the end of its theatrical run.
That said, it's far from a certainty.
"It's all about timing for these box-office behemoths," says analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. "Avengers: Infinity War is in a nifty spot right now, as it will certainly remain potent until after Memorial Day. That kind of long run is the only way it could eclipse Jurassic World as the top grossing summer movie of all-time."
