AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Star Benedict Cumberbatch Shares His One Regret About The Marvel Studios Movie

Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme arguably stole the show in Avengers: Infinity War but the British actor has now revealed that he actually has one major regret about the epic superhero ensemble...

Avengers: Infinity War boasted a massive ensemble cast and Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange ended up with a pretty significant role in the Marvel Studios movie. While he ended up turning to dust, you'd best believe he'll have some sort of role to play in the follow-up but there's one thing the actor wishes he could go back and change!

It's not something his character did or even a moment he wishes he'd acted a little differently in; instead, Cumberbatch (who may start shooting Doctor Strange 2 as soon as next year if recent reports are to be believed) regrets not sneaking into a screening to enjoy the shocked reactions of fans.

"This is my biggest regret of that whole time is that I didn’t sneak in to see people’s reaction. And I wish I had. I really do. I really wish I’d done that. And I think it was such a long press tour, by the time my family got me home I was well and truly on holiday and with them. Or was I working? Geez, I can’t even remember anymore. I think I had a tiny break and then I was riding into doing a TV drama about Brexit.

"But yeah, it’s my biggest regret of that whole experience. And there aren’t that many regrets, because it was a wild ride. I mean, just selling that movie by not being able to say anything. But the places we got to go – and it was very cool. I know other people who did it. I think Tom Holland did it. I know Mark Ruffalo took his
children, because he then FaceTimed us from the cinema."

While Cumberbatch will probably get the opportunity to sneak into a screening of Avengers 4, there more than likely won't be a moment as shocking as Doctor Strange being dusted with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes so he definitely missed out! Regardless, his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking bright, so that must be some sort of consolation.

That clickbait headline though

I was really surprised to see how much I enjoyed his performance and character in IW. Wasn’t huge on his solo movie but his cameo in Ragnarok was pretty great. He just seemed a lot more comfortable in the role.

Also speaks volumes for Benedict’s acting ability because you can tell he wasn’t on set with some of his Avenger co-stars while shooting.

I just don't understand why they didn't just let him be British.

@Oberlin4Prez - Because dr strange is American

@MadameCipher - And the Ancient One is Tibetan. If you can make him a white Scottish Woman, I think Dr. strange can be British. At least then we're not talking about ostricizing an entire group of people just to make a buck, which is why they chose Tilda Swinton over a regionally accurate actor.

@Oberlin4Prez - He sounds better American anyway.

@Oberlin4Prez - He's a New Yorker. Born and raised. It would be more trouble trying to explain why a successful New York surgeon is British.

@MadameCipher - His accent took a little getting used to for me at first, but now I’ve really warmed up to it.

@Oberlin4Prez - they chose Tilda Swinton because they were afraid to play into negative asian stereotypes which backfired because then it became about whitewashing characters

@Oberlin4Prez - Why would he be British? Because Cumberbatch is? The character is American, and the whole point of acting is to become the character.
Oberlin4Prez
Oberlin4Prez - 11/6/2018, 7:54 PM
@MasterMix - Yeah because a successful British person living in America is so difficult to comprehend. By golly that's never happened.

Oberlin4Prez - 11/6/2018, 7:56 PM
@JamesPunn - yeah but Marvel makes changes to characters all the time. Cheese and rice people I'm not saying they should have had Doctor Strange be a trans lesbian or something. We're talking about a difference of six hours by plane. Why is that so fecking difficult or unreasonable.
Oberlin4Prez
Oberlin4Prez - 11/6/2018, 7:58 PM
@Kman - No, the writer of the film said they did what they did because to have a Tibetan character would have meant less money at the Chibese box office. Fiege said that other BS to cover his own ass.

@Oberlin4Prez - Name 5 examples
Oberlin4Prez
Oberlin4Prez - 11/6/2018, 8:26 PM
@MasterMix - I don't have to, because it wouldn't matter if I had 100 examples, you'd still argue about it, so I'm done.
MasterMix
MasterMix - 11/6/2018, 8:36 PM
@Oberlin4Prez - No argument, I'm on your side. I also thought it was strange (no pun intended) when they didn't use Benedict Cumberbatch's natural speaking. I just figured they were going the extra mile for authenticity.
JamesPunn
JamesPunn - 11/6/2018, 9:42 PM
@Oberlin4Prez - I'm not saying that it's completely unreasonable. I just don't understand why you think it would make more sense for them to make an American character British.
Kman

@Oberlin4Prez - From an interview with Scott Derrickson:

“The first decision that I made was to make it a woman,” Derrickson said, adding, “but when I envisioned that character being played by an Asian actress, it was a straight-up Dragon Lady.”
“I just didn’t feel like there was any way to get around that because the Dragon Lady, by definition, is a domineering, powerful, secretive, mysterious, Asian woman of age with duplicitous motives — and I just described Tilda’s character," he said. "I really felt like I was going to be contributing to a bad stereotype.”

Kman - 11/7/2018, 6:40 AM
@Oberlin4Prez - And I've read what the writer said too... and it seems like the same kind of thing. Trying to prevent offending a large group of people so as to not lose money on your film.

These are not racist intentions... but were also not fully thought out, as it only created another controversy.

Question. Is doctor strange the sorcerer supreme yet?
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 11/6/2018, 2:26 AM
@MadameCipher

I don’t think so. They haven’t explicitly stated it. He’ll prolly reach that status at the end of the sequel maybe.

He’ll have to do something crazy OP.

@MadameCipher - I've been thinking about this and I noticed in IW Strange refers to himself as "The Master of the Mystic Arts." It was probably just to intimidate/stall Thanos, but we know from his own movie that anyone who trains hard enough can achieve the title "Master of the Mystic Arts" (which Strange does achieve in his solo).
