Is it possible that 2027 won't feature the release of a new MCU movie? As of now, Avengers: Secret Wars is the only blockbuster scheduled to open in theaters next year, but there are concerns that it could slip into 2028.
Multiple social media scoopers, including @ApocHorseman and Daniel Richtman, are reporting that shooting won't begin until next January. While it's certainly possible that Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers could get Avengers: Secret Wars finished in time, this is a little concerning.
As of now, X-Men is scheduled for May 5, 2028, with Ghost Rider following on July 28, and Black Panther 3 set to close out the year on December 15. Avengers: Secret Wars would presumably take that May slot, but 2027 will be a long year with only Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 streaming in the Spring.
Still, if the Avengers: Secret Wars script is completed and in a good place, Marvel Studios can surely make sure it meets its December 2027 release date. It's also not impossible that those recent Avengers: Doomsday reshoots were used to film some Secret Wars content.
During a recent interview, filmmaker Joe Russo said, "I think people are going to be surprised [by Avengers: Doomsday]. It’s a very surprising ending. It’s a very surprising movie, and that’s all we’ll say about it."
Many fans think they know how the movie will end, but it sounds like it might not be as simple as Doctor Doom taking his seat on Battleworld's throne as its new leader. Hopefully, the wait to see how Secret Wars resolves Doomsday's ending won't be any longer than a year.
The confirmed (or semi-confirmed, at least) cast of Avengers: Secret Wars includes Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter).
Also appearing are Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), and Noah Jupe.
The Russo Brothers direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, with whom they previously collaborated on the Avengers and Captain America franchises. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has also been enlisted to refine the story, alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.
