RUMOR: AVENGERS 5 Closing In On A Director As Production Gears Up To Begin Sooner Than Expected

Another rumoured production update for Avengers 5 has been revealed, and it sounds like work will begin sooner than expected. We also have news on Marvel Studios' hunt for a new director. Check it out...

By JoshWilding - May 28, 2024 05:05 AM EST

Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, the movie lost that shortly after Marvel Studios decided to take the focus off Kang the Conqueror (a reaction to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's mixed reviews and Jonathan Majors' firing).

While there have been some pretty reliable Doctor Doom rumours, a new actor is expected to play a Kang Variant who serves as the Multiverse Saga's main threat. Meanwhile, Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron is overhauling Avengers 5's script after Jeff Loveness first took a crack at it.

He was supposedly fired from the project shortly after the Ant-Man threequel flopped, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton left the movie to focus on Wonder Man and the Shang-Chi sequel.

Scooper @MyTimeToShineH has shared an update on Avengers 5 today, claiming that pre-production begins next month. This comes after reports cameras will start rolling in December 2024/January 2025.

The bigger news may be the fact Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is supposedly close to having a director sign on to helm the movie. Unfortunately, there's still no word on who that is, though we'd bet on an announcement hitting the trades in the coming days.

Little is known about the upcoming Avengers movies, though a recent rumour claims to reveal the identities of five characters who will be key to this adventure. Those are Captain America (Sam Wilson), Spider-Man, Moon Knight, The Hulk, and She-Hulk.

No additional context has been provided, though it's previously been reported that Spidey will lead his own team in the "grounded" movie. The MCU's Captain America should absolutely be front and centre, while it's about time we catch up with Moon Knight again after that big Jake Lockley cliffhanger.

How can this movie address that and Moony's place in the wider MCU? That remains to be seen.

As for The Hulk and his cousin She-Hulk, not one but two powerhouse superheroes will be crucial when it comes to turning the tide in what could be another Multiversal War. We're not expecting another season of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, so Jennifer Walters making the transition into the Avengers franchise is a logical next step.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027. As always, stay tuned for updates as we have them!

Was hoping we would get an avengers vs X-men film before Kang dynasty & secret wars but hey ho.

TheVisionary25 - 5/28/2024, 5:51 AM
@TheMetaMan - we haven’t even established any of the X-Men in the MCU so this would be beyond rushed right now.

@TheMetaMan - Maybe this is that.
TheMetaMan

@TheVisionary25 - No i think this would be a great way to introduce the x-men into the MCU by having them fight the avengers. Think - Batman vs Superman dawn of justice. Something akin to that could work.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/28/2024, 6:34 AM
@TheMetaMan - no , I don’t think so

I guess if you think BVS was rushed or not which I think it was so this would be the same to me

I would rather they establish the X-Men on their own first and then if naturally led to can fight the Avengers
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 5/28/2024, 6:45 AM
@TheVisionary25 - You’d rather a buildup between the two forces, a union of sorts then a conflict erupts much like the civil war storyline. Yeah I get that. However I’d prefer a conflict between the two factions (like BvS) then once resolved they can all unite and fight kang, beyonder etc. Like infinity war and endgame. We can agree to disagree on this one because neither of us are compromising. Haha 😆

Edit: I wouldn’t say BvS was rushed. I like the non/linear approach to storytelling I think it works. I don’t think every story has to follow a lateral direction. It’s like the prequels for example. I like the fact that they came after the original Star Wars trilogy.

Who is even left
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/28/2024, 8:06 AM
@WhateverItTakes - Most the characters that were heroes in infinity war and Endgame plus all those introduced since, sure we lost three of the first six (as well as T'Challa) but way more available now including the two biggest Marvel characters from prior to the MCU with Spider-Man and Hulk (few if any outside of comics recalled Iron Man, even less knew about Black Widow). They have available most the non-mutant characters who are amongst the 100 who have been Avengers, so a LOT left to use.

So they have for Avengers 5
Antman x 2
Wasp x 2
Hulk
Thor
Captain America (Sam, but possible Steve could still appear)
Hawkeye x 2
Hercules (unlikely)
Black Panther (Shuri)
White Vision
Black Knight (unlikely)
White Widow
Mantis (unlikely)
Cpt Marvel (Danvers)
She-Hulk
StarFox (unlikely)
War Machine
Namor (unlikely)
Moon Knight
U.S.Agent
Spider-Man
Sentry (unlikely)
Echo (unlikely)
Dr Strange
Ares (unlikely)
Bucky
Stature
Valkyrie
Red Hulk
Daredevil
Shang-Chi
White Tiger (unlikely)
Deadpool (unlikely)
Ms. Marvel (and could bring back Photon but both unlikely)

All of those have been full members of the Avengers in the comics, obviously most are unlikely and the bigger question if who the leader(s) would be but know that will likely be SamCap and having not one but three likely big hitters with Hulk, Thor and She-Hulk the team can easily be as powerfull if not more so than the original six.

If it will be a good team/film is more the open question.

Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/28/2024, 11:46 AM
@WhateverItTakes - Far as I am aware she has never been a full member of the main Avengers in the comics (only a loose assoc with young Avengers during the outlawed storyline), the main team she was on was Champions, others I could add that are available if including ALL (such as the rest of GotG) not just those who were in print for the main team :D

Wait , so they are going into pre-production without having a director signed on as of yet?

Yeah , I don’t buy this!!.

Where are the X-Men? Phuck Thor 5. Phuck Avengers 5. Where are the X-Men? Disney bought the property in 2019, and we have yet to have a rebooted X-Men in any fashion. "Rebooted X-Men. Not 60 year old Hugh Jackman. Not an extremely great follow-up to the X-Men Animated Series. An X-Men, live-action, full-blown reboot, movie, or tv show. Where is it?
I don't give a phuck about some stupid-ass Echo or Daredevil or Deadpool or Agatha phucking Harkness or Ironheart or Thunderbolts or Avengers or Guardians Of The Galaxy or a Robert Downey who's staring 70 in the face.....where the phuck are the X-Men?

People still dumb enough to defend Star Wars (Andor aside) will tell you that 4 out of their 5 movies made a billion from 2015 to 2019. If that's so, who stops making billion dollar movies? Who walks away from a billion? Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. Why are the X-Men, the so-called "REAL" X-Men, the one people have been waiting for, and interested to see what they'd look like, being kept off movie screens along with Star Wars?

People who defend Marvel Studios and Disney always say that shit is so great and smooth. Well if everything is so great and smooth, why aren't movies being made when Disney is known for shifting them out left and right? I'm not talking "post-The Marvels" Disney, I'm talking "PRE-The Marvels" Disney. That Disney couldn't wait to shit out everything in sight. Both pre and post Disney refuse to give you anything outside of a "lighting-in-a-bottle" great animated TV show, and even that had its showrunner removed from the series.

I don't give a god damn about no corny-ass phuckin' Avengers. I never have and I never will. X-Men 97 proved (and reminded) that the X-Men always were, and always will, be the best thing about Marvel. The X-Men ARE Marvel, and phuck anyone that tells you otherwise. I phuck with Spider-Man, Thor, and Hulk, and a few other characters when written well (heck, Winter Soldier is arguably my favorite comic movie, period), but it's all about the X-Men, and it ain't even close.

Phuck anyone else.

@videovac - Most sensible time to bring in X-men considering they were locked out of recasting for at least five years was always after the Secret Wars reboot unless doing more with the FoxMen versions which we are getting very soon (and possibly a FoxMen film set where Photon was stranded prior for Secret War).

A comment I made earlier has vanished.

A shame.

While it's valid content, I'm curious what'll happen if this person is also got by Marvel - like CanWeGetSomeToast.

Your reliance on those two could be an issue sometime down the line, Joshy-Boy.

I hope whomever it is they hire as the director has some big hits under their belt, or at the very least an excellent vision as a filmmaker.

I'm all for giving unknowns a shot at big success, but I think with an Avengers film it needs to be someone that knows big success already. Obviously that success doesn't have to be from big awards or whatever. I just would hope that the person has a really good track record with whatever they've worked on prior to this.

I think any Avengers film needs to be a hit in order to keep the Marvel flame burning. A lot hinges on the success of the biggest tent pole; so they'd be smart to make sure it's a banger, and not a hopeful shot in the dark. Fingers crossed for an impressive hire!

TheVisionary25 - 5/28/2024, 8:18 AM
@RedFury - that’s fair but I think it shoukd be someone that’s already worked on a MCU film or project

Like I wouldn’t mind a Raimi or Coogler being given the keys for a film.
RedFury
RedFury - 5/28/2024, 10:11 AM
@TheVisionary25 - a tried and tested hand at the helm like Coogler or Raimi would be perfect.

Raimi is actually one of my absolute favorite directors, and has inspired me in so many of my creative pursuits. I'd be over the moon if he got to helm an Avengers flick. Especially if they let him bring his signature style. Count me in!

The only team worthy of calling it Avengers would be the following:

Spider-Man
Dr. Strange
Thor
Captain America (SAMerica?)
Ant-Man
Hulk
Captain Marvel

This can't be a random group of Marvel heroes. It needs to have ties to the old team (Thor and Hulk) with more established supporting cast (Sam, Strange, Spider-Man). And Captain Marvel makes sense because she's powerful as hell and was the ret-conned inspiration for Fury creating the team.

No She-Hulk, Moon Knight, etc. Use them in Secret Wars. Or don't call it Avengers, but then again they need to in order to make money. I still stand by the idea we need a complete reboot of the MCU. Stop making movies for a few years and then come back to it with new versions of the OG heroes like Avengers and Fantastic Four. Give Spider-Man back to Sony for them to keep butchering until Marvel can get the rights back.
