AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Box Office Record Is About To Be Shot Down By Tom Cruise's TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Top Gun: Maverick continues to take aim at box office success, and after gunning down a record held by Titanic, it now has Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War in its sights. Read on for details...

Top Gun: Maverick has significantly exceeded expectations at the box office, and is on track to be the biggest movie of 2022. With a $662 million haul in North America, it's now sunk Titanic to become the seventh-biggest movie of all time according to ActioNewz.com

Internationally, the sequel's total sits at $690 million, taking its global cume to $1.3 billion. Maverick remains Tom Cruise's only $1 billion blockbuster, and with highly positive word-of-mouth, it continues to bring big money in on a weekly basis. Honestly, this isn't really a surprise, especially as it's a feel-good blockbuster delivering some classic adrenaline-fueled action.

Even more impressive is the fact that Top Gun: Maverick is now taking aim at a big record held by Avengers: Infinity War, North America's sixth highest-grossing movie with $678 million.

Whether it goes any higher remains to be seen, as it would next need to overcome the likes of Black Panther ($700 million), Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($853 million), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million). The only one at risk is probably Black Panther.

Top Gun: Maverick remained in the top five for ten weeks after opening with $160.5 million, and in a relatively slow August, it's not showing the usual signs of slowing down.

"Top Gun: Maverick is the must-see cinematic experience of the year!" our own Rohan Patel raved earlier this year. "Packed with jaw-dropping aerial sequences, thrilling edge-of-your-seat moments, genuine heart, epic romance, huge stakes, and one of the absolute best performances of Tom Cruise's legendary career, this is the theatrical experience you've been waiting for."

2022 has definitely seen the box office recover following the pandemic, and this movie has been at the forefront. By the time all is said and done, it's likely to be the year's biggest release, though Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water are sure to be two major threats to that crown.

Top Gun: Maverick is now playing in theaters.
