AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR & Other Superhero Films Help Push Domestic Box Office Past $6 Billion In Record Time
We're halfway through 2018 & another box office record has been shattered, as the North American market manages to exceed $6 billion thanks to superhero films like Avengers: Infinity War & Black Panther.
By this time last year, the North American box office had managed to rack up a total of $5.647 billion thanks in large part to films like Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman. As a result, 2017 became the closest to reaching the $6 billion before the end of June.
This year, however, has managed to surpass that massive number and reach the $6 billion mark, making 2018 the first year to hit that milestone before the first day of July.
While Marvel and Disney can’t take all of the credit for this feat, Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther managed to comprise 23% of the domestic box office. Plus, thanks to Pixar’s Incredibles 2 becoming a record-breaking success, Disney films currently make up four of the ten highest grossing movies of the year.
The other top 10 earners of the year include Fox’s Deadpool 2, which recently exceeded $700 million worldwide, and Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Though it's possible the box office in North America may settle down as the year continues, The Wrap notes 2018 could also break 2016's record of $11.3 billion if it continues at its current pace. And with more potential hits like Aquaman and Ant-Man and the Wasp still to come, there's a good chance we'll see another record broken by the end of the year.
