AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR & Other Superhero Films Help Push Domestic Box Office Past $6 Billion In Record Time

We're halfway through 2018 & another box office record has been shattered, as the North American market manages to exceed $6 billion thanks to superhero films like Avengers: Infinity War & Black Panther.

By this time last year, the North American box office had managed to rack up a total of $5.647 billion thanks in large part to films like Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman. As a result, 2017 became the closest to reaching the $6 billion before the end of June.

This year, however, has managed to surpass that massive number and reach the $6 billion mark, making 2018 the first year to hit that milestone before the first day of July.

While Marvel and Disney can’t take all of the credit for this feat, Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther managed to comprise 23% of the domestic box office. Plus, thanks to Pixar’s Incredibles 2 becoming a record-breaking success, Disney films currently make up four of the ten highest grossing movies of the year.

The other top 10 earners of the year include Fox’s Deadpool 2, which recently exceeded $700 million worldwide, and Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Though it's possible the box office in North America may settle down as the year continues, The Wrap notes 2018 could also break 2016's record of $11.3 billion if it continues at its current pace. And with more potential hits like Aquaman and Ant-Man and the Wasp still to come, there's a good chance we'll see another record broken by the end of the year.

God, all these superhero movies are ruining the film industry. They're making too much money and too many people like them. We need more real movies to save it.

Black Panther is the domestic king at the moment as it somehow is still creeping toward $700 million.

Let's be honest tho, all these records are gonna break next year when the conclusions to the current Marvel and Star Wars saga are released in the same year.

Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War are going to get Oscar nods for the next two years. Black Panther will win one for costume

@JohnnyTBP - Black Panther will be the first comic book movie to get a best picture nod. It probably won’t win, but it’ll get nominated.

@JohnnyTBP @richal13 - I definitely think both are going to get Oscar nominations one way or the other. They don't need to, and they don't need to win, but both movies have just been to big commercially and critically to not notice.

I say either or both could be nominated for Best Picture/Best Adapted Screenplay and you can make a strong case for both of them. Black Panther might just get that Best Costume Design nomination (and could win it too), and I also hope it gets nominations for Best Original Soundtrack, Best Set Decoration, and Best Cinematography. Infinity War is definitely getting a Best Special Effects nomination.

@richal13 - I doubt any comic book movie will ever get nominated for Best Picture with the way the academy is.
