BOX OFFICE: MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Becomes The Quickest To Reach $500M

Marvel's The Avengers may not end up grossing as much as Avatar by the end of its run, but the superhero ensemble has now become the fastest film to reach $500 million domestically. As for where it sits on the list of all-time highest grossing, watch your back Potter...

@ERCboxoffice (Exhibitor Relations) reports that Marvel's The Avengers has become the quickest film to reach $500 million in North America. The previous record was held by James Cameron's 3D epic, Avatar, which hit the $500 million mark in 32 days. The Avengers did it in just 23 (so that's yet ANOTHER record the Joss Whedon helmed film has broken then). Despite facing stiff competition in the form of Men in Black 3, it is still expected to make $47.1 million this four day holiday, taking its current total up to $523 million. Overseas, it currently sits at $781 million, resulting in a worldwide gross of $1.295 billion. That puts The Avengers well on track to take Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's #3 spot on the all-time list of highest grossing movies.

Meanwhile, Men in Black 3 has opened to an expected domestic weekend gross of $70 million (considerably less than the previously predicted $85 million - $100 million) talking its global to $202 million. Be sure to check out my 4* review of Men in Black 3 by clicking HERE.

To finish its run at 3rd is brilliant, it didnt have to beat Avatar or Titanic. Those films wont be beaten for now. I want to see it one more time just to take full advantage of the big screen.

to be in a race with harry potter and avatar in anything is not a positive thing. it means you are among really lame company so this is nothing to be proud of.

I really hope it manages to take the #1 spot from the highly overrated Avatar. I never expected it to do this well though! Well done Avengers!

I wonder how TDKR and Amazing Spidey will compare...

@brewtownpsych... What? That makes no sense. HP and Avatar were both incredibly successful profit-wise, so to be close in terms of that is something to be incredibly proud of.

@ACire I'm really curious how tdkr will fair at the b.o. I would estimate it makes a billion through its run. As for Spiderman, I am completely lost at how I much I'll think it'll make. Its definitely going to take some good word of mouth.

Hell yes!! I wonder if it will pass the 600 million mark. If titanic didn't do that 3D release I'm sure it would have a great chance to pass it.

@banekill77 so what's your point. Of course it's getting more money because of 3D. I'm just stating that titanic added to its gross by the 3D re-release. So what's "kinda amusing"?

Even though this movie was good, I don't understand how people can constantly keep going to see it. I can understand two times, maybe three if someone else pays. But six? Seven? Quit wasting your money, haha.

Anyways, good job, The Avengers!

i doubt TDKR will be as big as TDK minus the Heath Ledger death factor, Bane is not Joker type villain factor among other things. but i have a feeling TDKR will outgun TASM in terms of Box Office returns.

I've seen it four times all in 2D. Lol. I'm seriously considering seeing it again. But at this point I think i'm going to wait for the inevitable re-release.

Wow why can't you just accept the fact Avengers is having a great run? I will be one of the first to see the last Nolan bat-flick. We have gotten some incredible flicks. The records Avengers continue to break are VERY impressive. If you feel the Nolan-verse is better great! But save your posts for the bat threads. You guys are taking the enjoyment out of reading certain articles. The Marvel vs DC debate is tiresome. Just be happy we are getting CBM. If Avengers would have sucked we would have all been screwed.

This is good, but more important to me is not how much more it makes now but how well Marvel handles the next slew of movies.

I don't want to see another IM2 scenario, or more recasting. I'm so looking forward to Thor 2 (hands down my favorite Avenger), as long as we keep getting the correct balance of directors to movies I'll be happy.

Bring on Iron Fist as well

man i cannot believe its making this much!! Well deserving though, It was an amazing film. I seen 3 times. Im good until I get the Blu ray.

I still cant believe it might beat TDK domestically

I desperately want to see The Avengers take down James Cameron!! Avatar is easily one of the WORST films I have ever seen (and I only watched less than half of it before I got bored and turned it off)! James Cameron is an extremely arrogant windbag and I would love to see the Avengers knock him down a few pegs!

RocketMadnessBoss - I have seen it 4 times now and plan to see it at least a couple more times. I just can't get enough! I don't know what it is - it's just an awesome and fun movie! And for the record, we go when it's cheapest, like $5 Tuesdays and to $4.50 Twilight matinees.

@maximus It's going to sell more tickets than tdk. That's really all that matters if you're trying to go there.

@ MadTitan

I don't think the notoriety of the villain is as important as the performance though. Prior to Thor not many people gave a damn about Loki, now look at him after how Hiddleston handled the role. I actually hated the Scarecrow up until Cillian Murphy's performance.

For me Ledger's death may have been a draw but the movie itself held it's own, after all it still made a killing on home release. Let's also not forget that the same guy who got that performance out of Ledger is still the same guy behind TDKR's Bane, and Hardy is known for his acting chops.

Anyways I guess at this point all we can do is speculate and hope that all the remaining CBMs do well.

Avatar is easily the most overrated movie ever.
