Details For The Avengers' Planned Opening Revealed!

Make the jump for vague details on how director Joss Whedon intends to open Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures’ The Avengers, among other cool things!

A friend of mine on Facebook, Rick Kinkade, was able to visit the Albuquerque offices of The Avengers and meet with director Joss Whedon. He had participated in a charity benefiting the Gulf Coast and had won an audience with “The Whedon”.

Initially, Whedon had planned to use the Wasp in the film and said, “I tried to write her in, but I could not make it work.” He laughed and said, “I need more chicks in this movie!” It’s possible that Whedon could not use the Wasp due to Edgar Wright’s impending Ant-Man film. At the time, the thing Whedon was most worried about was the lack of rehearsal time with the cast and a table read was pretty much out of the question. Regarding the CG elements, the only two purely CG characters would be the Hulk and Iron Man. He had worked on Ang Lee’s Hulk script and tried to salvage the last third of the film (which in my opinion sucks, but I don’t blame Whedon).

Here’s where the really previously unknown stuff kicks in: Rick and Joss discovered they were both fans of actress Joan Leslie (who was in films like Sergeant York and Yankee Doodle Dandy; coincidentally, she was also on an episode of “The Incredible Hulk” – “My Favorite Magician”). Whedon is planning to digitally recreate her image (Whedon described this as “Gumping” in reference to using CG in a historical significance ala Forrest Gump) in a newsreel, similar to Citizen Kane as a way to start the film back in the 40s. He used a film Leslie was in called This is the Army and will lift footage out of that. The newsreel supposedly would feature Leslie as Cap’s girlfriend, which of course, would not be canon with Captain America: The First Avenger, but I have a theory. In the days of the 40s, tabloid journalism was a lot different. News hounds basically had to make up their own information and hope that their guesses were right. My idea is that Leslie is coupled with Cap as a kind of “celebrity couple” akin to Katherine Hepburn and Howard Hughes’ relationship (coincidentally, Hughes was the inspiration for Tony Stark and his father).

Outside of The Avengers, Joss talked about how he thought The Matrix was a perfect film but they had lost the originality of it when the sequels came around. He also expressed his dislike of Superman Returns. It seems to me, however, that Whedon would be utilizing similar technology that brought Marlon Brando back to life for Returns to bring Joan Leslie into The Avengers.

I have to thank Mr. Rick Kinkade for allowing me to use this information. I fully appreciate his willingness to help us anticipate Walt Disney Pictures’ The Avengers. To me, May 4th 2012 can’t come soon enough!

@Zack1991 Awesome find! :) I'm an old movie buff and I love Joan Leslie, I really enjoyed her performance in Sargent York! Great movie btw if you enjoy old movies. :) I would love to see this happen at any rate! :)

So....the film starts with a montage dating back to the 40's. Could this be perhaps showing how SHEILD came about as well as introducing the Avengers through newsreels and articles and stuff as a way to get a quick general background on them for those who haven't seen any of the other movies or just as a general "catch-up" cool...
That's what I'm getting from that tbh

God damn she is hot. Whedon should not break continuity with any of the other films. I'm still on the fence about Whedon at all. Other than crappy CW shows, what has the man done that is all THAT impressive?

Ha so Wasp would have been in the film if it wasn't for Edgar Wright

noone else worried that it kind of seems they are tryin to save money by having iron man largely(all) cgi. i know obv theres a lot of scenes where the suit was all cgi, even in the previous movies, but there d also be moments when robert was clearly wearing real parts of it.

hope this wont let the fans down :F

@ComicalDiaster that was one of my biggest nitpicks about CAPTAIN AMERICA. They say in IRON MAN 2 that Howard Stark was one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. I WANNA SEE S.H.I.E.L.D. FOUNDED DARN IT!!!!!!

@level1paladin have you not seen SERENITY? or his co-writing efforts (namely TOY STORY and ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE)

@ncreb humor me.

@MrAnonymous to be fair, Edgar Wright had been working on ANT-MAN since 2007. Whedon was hired to direct THE AVENGERS in 2010.

@RorMachine why thank you! :D

I'd say the far more obvious theory is that Joan Leslie will just be in one of the many movies Cap obviously starred in during his USO days. (which we saw him filming and watching during the movie)

Great info otherwise. But "celebrity couple"?

@JoshWilding good theory, I didn't think about that. "Celebrity couple"? come on, you haven't seen THE AVIATOR?

imnotwearinghockeypants the name Joss is a sexy one, I wish that was my first name Zachariah-Jeremiah.

Some people don't know who luck they've got it these days. I mean, an Avengers movie, shame my ex-wife's not around to see this, I might throw her a copy of the movie when it's out. I'm sure they have tv's in the grave.

It's a shame that they didn't use Wasp. It makes sense now. He knows what his doing!

@JoshWilding: LOL! That doesn't look like Loki shaking his head. fail! It instead just looks like he is turning his head to look at someone correctly, which is exactly what it's supposed to be.

Whit all this CGI I wonder why nobody is complaining about how much is going to be spent on this film.

This Joan Leslie thing sounds like a big waste of money and time that could be better spent somewhere else. I'm getting a red flag feeling. I guess Whedon feels like indulging himself.

Not only did Whedon do Buffy and Serenity, both which had big casts of characters that he made work perfectly, but why does no one ever mention his run on Astonishing X-Men?

His run on Astonishing X-Men was both critically and fan acclaimed, and more importantly, it shows that he knows how to handle a team of superheroes.

Whedon is perfect for this.

@ phoe

why does everyone think Iron Man will be 100% CGI the entire time? there is an article that got posted earlier today showing an Iron Man stunt double and people around him were holding an Iron Man helmet for him to wear, as well as the entire chest piece.

Iron Man will be 100% CGI in parts, and in others, probably close up shots and things, he'll be wearing an actual replica of the suit...just like the previous IM films.

@nld3 I doubt Disney would let Whedon cross a line.

Not sure how much of this will actually happen, and how much Joss might have been using some misdirection to avoid talking about what is really important about the movie. This sounds a bit absurd. Why would you CGI an actress from yesteryear that 90% of the audience won't recognize playing a character nobody has ever heard of?

it says he's just lifting footage from an older film of hers, that means it's probably just going to be in one of caps old movies. like joshwilding said.
