JANE THE VIRGIN Star Gina Rodriguez Wants To Play America Chavez In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
America Chavez was a member of the Young Avengers and is both a hero of color and an openly LGBTQ character, but will she be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Gina Rodriguez hopes so!
Gina Rodriguez has made a name for herself as the lead star in critically acclaimed CW series Jane the Virgin, but she already has her sights set on joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe...as a very specific character. America Chavez hails from an alternate universe and is a Latina/openly gay superheroine who was a member of the short-lived New Teen Brigade, the Young Avengers, and The Ultimates.
She's about to get her own series, but could the character's future lie on the big screen? Rodriguez certainly hopes so as she revealed during a "Hacking the Script: Disrupting Diversity in Hollywood" panel at SXSW that she is a huge fan of the MCU and wants to take on the role of America Chavez.
According to Geeks of Color, the actress "jumped with excitement" when the character was mentioned and went on to reveal that she's actually told her manager to seek out an audition for the role should Marvel begin looking to cast her. It's hard to say where America could fit into the MCU, but this would be a stellar bit of casting and might add the diversity many believe this world needs.
