Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS Climax & Sequel; Steve Rogers' POV No Longer Story's Focus

Touching on the film's "enormous" climax, as well as plans for The Avengers sequel, Joss Whedon reveals Captain America's point-of-view won't be centralized as planned. Check it out!

Considering the summer blockbuster is near-completed, Joss Whedon has been able to talk more freely and mindfully about Marvel's The Avengers; as showcased with the many interviews during SXSW weekend. And now, the writer-director has offered up even more deets in the latest issue of Total Film magazine.

Having such a wide variety of characters, initially Whedon sought focus by telling the story largely from one person's perspective; defrosted WW2 super-soldier Captain America. "That was the plan anyway". However, "In the final cut that's probably not true," Whedon reveals. "There was stuff with Cap I cut out. Although he has an 'in' with the audience in that this world is stranger to him, so he's an identification figure."

The climax Whedon pitched Marvel was so enormous that it was apparent there wouldn't be enough time or money to pull it off, "But that's exactly what we shot," he reveals. The scale is "quite large", but it's not about that. "Its the toll it takes," Whedon says. "I find superhero movies to be a little too neat. And when you have Earth's mightiest heroes - like Thor, you know Thor! - you have to put them in a situation that makes you feel like they're not all going to make it." "The climax of this movie isn't one where you go, 'Oh yes, there's the Avengers, good for them, bye!'" When it all hits, it hits hard."

Whedon then went on to discuss The Avengers potential sequel, essentially revealing that he went all-out to avoid Iron Man 2 syndrome, where the story's reduced to a series of sequel-pointers. "We DO give a nod to a greater problem than the one solved in this film." says Whedon. "I'm a great believer in the idea that if you make the first one to be a 'first one,' then you have already failed," asserts Whedon. "As much as we want to service the idea of a film in a franchise, I want this to be a satisfying film experience. I don't want people to go out saying, "When's the next part?" I want people to say, "Oh, I want to see that again!"

I'm getting a little worried. I hope Whedon's vision comes through after all the cuts.

I liked the idea about it coming from Cap's POV, it made sense

I was really looking forward to the Cap POV, mostly because I think Marvel really needs to hammer home that he IS the leader. I really hope classic Captain America leadership shines through in Avengers. Didn't quite buy him as the leader we know and love in TFA. Hope they rectify that!

well since he says he wants a smaller sequel, they should start telling the story of Thanos on the second one and end it on an EPIC 3rd film

Everyone needs to relax. I know people that have seen it in its close to 3 hour form and even they said a lot needs to be cut ou to tighten it up. Wheadon knows what he is doing , this movie will be tight and there want be scenes that feel like they are forced into it.

I'm a bit worried now.

Studio interference may have reared it's head and made him change it from a CAP POV narrative to an IRON MAN one, which in itself would be disappointing. What even more worrying to me is that if in editing you've changed your entire movie POV does the movie work as well?

I'm concerned.

Well only about a month until reviews start trickling in. You can still tell Whedon is a little bit bitter about missing out on other franchises when he calls super hero films to be a little dull. Still like how he is calling out the competition. Should be a fun summer, and I can't wait to see this flick.

CATFA was my favorite of the bunch, but even I admit that it suffered because it just had to get Cap to the present to be in the Avengers.

He's got a more pressing need for his own subplot than the others, with finding out about Peggy and the rest of his friends.

I hope that's at least somewhat addressed, because if the closest thing he gets to a subplot is something concerning Tony's daddy issues, I will be most cross.

oooooo I soo Hope to God the main focus wont be on Ironman he already has 2 movies and a 3rd comin out next year, I really don't think that would be Joss's style to do something like that though, Hopefully all the characters will get equal screen time, actually if its anybodies movie I think its Thors.. not the character but mainly his universe, you know that whole space element which includes Loki, the Aliens, the cosmic cube, and probably some easter eggs we have yet to see.
mgeoff88
mgeoff88 - 3/13/2012, 2:32 PM
I guess, that's for the better. If the movie was solely from Cap's POV, it might have meant less screen time for everyone else.

A nod to a greater problem? Thanos maybe? I'm sure the Infinity Gauntlet will used in a movie. Or why would they bother making the prop?

@HelaGood Better his wings than his...
