MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Breaks Records As It Tops DVD And Blu-Ray Sales Charts

Marvel's The Avengers earned over $623 million in North America when it was released back in May, so it should perhaps come as no surprise to learn that the film is now dominating DVD and Blu-ray sales! Read on for details.

According to Home Media Magazine, Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has topped both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart (which keeps track of overall disc sales), and the Blu-ray specific sales chart as well. Marvel's previous movies also benefited as THOR moved up in the charts to #8, Captain America: The First Avengers to #13, Iron Man 2 to #14, The Incredible Hulk to #19, and Iron Man to #23. All five also ended up in the top 20 list on the Blu-ray chart. 72% of sales came from Blu-ray; a record high for a film released simultaneously on that format and DVD (perhaps proof that the latter is nearing the end of its days). 23% of consumers forked out a little extra for the more expensive 3D version. Coming in at #2 was animated feature, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1. A strong start, but Marvel's The Avengers actually sold 34 times as many copies! Ouch.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures Marvel’s The Avengers--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

STARRING:

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff/Black Widow
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk

I love how Iron Man 1 is the bottom because I'd say everyone's got it. Everyone has Iron Man 1, but it appears no one has Thor. It was a very underrated movie.

@siggisuperman & @CorronZenith30 my first too :D need to pick up the first three on blu ray though. Good first MCU blu ray, loved the One Shot.

And this is awesome news for Marvel. The more money they make the better it is for the future. Even if one of their films tank they'll have made enough from this movie to justify the loss :)

I loved all of the movies, but I am always as surprised at how much you guys liked Captain America. I thought the costume was very cool, butI really had a hard time getting over the fact that no one spoke german in the movie and there were no nazis. I mean it was very silly when they are all german in germany, speaking to other german people with not an american or englishman for miles yet they are all speaking in english ? I know it seems like nitpicking but it really put me off and so did the ending. Would have wanted a better ending for cap, maybe falling off a nuke into the ocean or something, just crashing the plane was a little stupid.

In The Avengers, russians spoke russian, people in south america were speaking some sort of south american language, it's those little details that make the movie.

I'd have to say I found CA to be a bit bland and preferred Thor. I don't know whether it was the character that wound me up or Chris's performance. I think I'll have to watch them both again this weekend and see if my opinion will change.

good, it deserves to be still breaking records...

the dark knight returns was good, but after reading the comic so many times I´m not interested in buying it. and with warner premiere out of business I dont think we´ll se part 2 any time soon.

The extra great win with the release of the Avengers was that Best Buy had the first four volumes of Avengers: EMH on sale, along with the earlier Avengers-related movies. Couldn't pass up on those great deals. I hope the rest of you out there that were missing any of those movies or show episodes were able to take advantage of that great sale.

I hope the Avengers stays at the top of the DVD sales list for a while. It's great to see a CBM succeed that celebrates the fact it's related to comic books, rather than acting ashamed of that link or trying to hide it, as way too many CBM's do. The Avengers was like a comic book brought to life, and I absolutely LOVED it.

@OtakuPapi

I expect them to be high maybe not as high as Avengers sales, but if TDKR ends up topping them you will most definitely see a whole lot of whining and bitching on here.
